They've got him on the Russians and the textile mills in the Mariana Islands. A cool mil from the Russians and half a mil from the textile mills. What this amounts to is proof that DeLay took bribes from foreign countries.

Wow. I've been waiting a long time for this.

1. Sinking deeper
I rather him not resign so we can savor his defeat by Nick Lampson whose district he destroyed and caused to lose. Payback is here.

11. I've got a feeling that he's not gonna last that long.
With what is now coming out, it appears that DeLay simply has to resign. He won't have a lick of support in Washington with this stuff out now. Two other Republicans have already filed for his seat -- and I don't think DeLay has ever had a primary challenger until now.

I think Nick Lampson will win, but I doubt DeLay will be his opponent. Lampson was my congressman before redistricting. I requested his assistance once and it was taken care of almost immediately. I can attest that nobody's better than Nick Lampson in constituent services. With restricting, I'm now in Ron Paul's district.

After reading the entire Washington Post article, I just don't see how DeLay can continue. This story is the first fall-out from Abramoff's plea deal. It's just beginning, and this is a big beginning.

96. Excellent choice for DeLay's cellmate
That haystack loon was a right wing DINO anyway, so those two would seem to have a lot in common. Traficant was convicted for notorious crimes such as requiring his staff to clean out his horse stables for free on weekends. Given the apparently graver magnitude of DeLay's misdeeds, it seems that his nutcase bunkmate would be eligible to leave the slammer much sooner.

NBC exclusive: DeLay’s, aide’s expenses commingled with lobbyist’s
Lisa Myers
Senior investigative correspondent

By Lisa Myers & the NBC Investigative Unit
Updated: 12:29 p.m. ET April 29, 2005
WASHINGTON - In August 1997, then-House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, R-Texas, and his friend lobbyist Jack Abramoff were at the Moscow Country Club — the most exclusive golf course in Russia. Hotel records obtained by NBC News show DeLay stayed two nights, in room 229, with Abramoff next door.

The cost of DeLay's room, with all the amenities, was $295 a night. On the bill, charges for DeLay and his chief of staff are mixed with Abramoff's — room charges, sports pool bar, mini bar and phone, for a total of $3,302.50

NBC News has learned the expenses were, in fact, put on the credit card of a lobbyist and a Russian businessman.

MISS TIMMERMAN MARRIES
WILLIAM FLEMING GEESLIN
In the room in which her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Warren Timmerman, were married,
Miss Mary Elizabeth Timmerman became the bride of William Fleming Geeslin of New York,
formerly of Macon, at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The ceremony took place in
one of the double parlors of the Timmerman home at 657 College Street, the home of Mrs.
Timmermans parents, Mrs. C. B. Adams and the late Mr. Adams.
Dr. Silas Johnson, pastor of Mulberry Street Methodist Church, performed the ceremony,
and Herbert Herrington, pianist, played the wedding music.
Miss Timmerman was given in marriage by her father and had as her only attendant her
sister, Mrs. Charles Fairbanks of St. Simons Island, the former Miss Evelyn Timmerman, who
was also married in the same room. An aunt of yesterday's bride, Mrs. Persons
Heath of Washington, D.C., was also married there.
Mr. Geeslin had as his best man his brother-in-law, D. W. Brosnan of Cincinnati, Ohio,
formerly of Macon, and ushers were Charlton Adams of Augusta, cousin of the bride, and
Charles Lines of Vidalia, brother-in-law of the groom ...
The bride wore the wedding gown worn by her sister, Mrs. Fairbanks ...
Late in the afternoon the couple left for a wedding trip and after two weeks will go to
New York City to live, the groom being stationed there with the FBI ...

19. This is good stuff!
<snip>

Some of the U.S. Family Network's revenue was used to pay for radio ads attacking vulnerable Democratic lawmakers in 1999; other funds were used to finance the cash purchase of a townhouse three blocks from DeLay's congressional office. DeLay's associates at the time called it "the Safe House."

DeLay made his own fundraising telephone pitches from the townhouse's second-floor master suite every few weeks, according to two former associates. Other rooms in the townhouse were used by Alexander Strategy Group, Buckham's newly formed lobbying firm, and Americans for a Republican Majority (ARMPAC), DeLay's leadership committee.

<snip>

One of the former associates, a Frederick, Md., pastor named Christopher Geeslin who served as the U.S. Family Network's director or president from 1998 to 2001, said Buckham further told him in 1999 that the payment was meant to influence DeLay's vote in 1998 on legislation that helped make it possible for the IMF to bail out the faltering Russian economy and the wealthy investors there.

"Ed told me, 'This is the way things work in Washington,' " Geeslin said. "He said the Russians wanted to give the money first in cash." Buckham, he said, orchestrated all the group's fundraising and spending and rarely informed the board about the details. Buckham and his attorney, Laura Miller, did not reply to repeated requests for comment on this article.

<snip>

this article is dynamite!

Quite simply, this is some of the best journalism I've read in some time. You can tell a LOT of legwork went into developing this very damning story. They were EXTREMELY careful to make sure the i's and t's were dotted and crossed, respectively. Good work, WP! How the mighty (in their own minds, anyways) are fallen. This DeLay guy is unbelievable. Now the big question for me: can the damage (redistricting/ regaining control of the House) be repaired?

Couldn't the Dem Party sue the guy for using foreign money to support negative campaign ads against an opposing party? Isn't there some question of "national security" there if foreign money comes into our election process?

The article is damning enough...but that bit about Russian money involved in negative ads against Dems just threw me over the edge here. :nuke:

He pled guilty to taking bribes so that he could avoid a harsher penalty.

BTW, I'm no legal expert and have only half a mind.

48. david brooks said DeLay is done as majority leader
on the news hour tonight, because of the Texas indictment and the looming Abramoff cooperation.

DeLay however has a chance to escape trial in Texas when an all republican appeals courts hears his argument to toss the case next week.
details here

----
off topic, but Ray asked Mark Shields what stories would carry over in 06, and the NSA domestic spying didn't make his list. What was he thinking? imho, it is the biggest story this year, at least, and the surface has barely been scratched. i don't think Mark was thinking clearly, he looked a little under the weather.

55. I was just wondering if a fix was in
I didn't know the appeals court was all repukes. The Hamper has been pretty belligerent throughout the whole money laundering court case. I think an advesary would exhibit this kind of behavior if they knew they were going to win because a fix was in.

Wonder why Ronnie Earle didn't get to reject this appeals court, in favor of one that's all Democrats? That would seem fair.

Thanks for sharing this, and welcome to DU!! :hi:

107. The appeals court is taking briefs regarding whether to review.
They haven't ruled as to whether they will even take the case. In ordinary circumstances, these Repugs would give DeLay an automatic pass. But now .... I have my doubts. Lots of mainline Republicans in Texas are sick, sick, sick of Tom DeLay. They have been for a long time, but he's been too powerful to tangle with. Remember his famous comment, "I am the federal government."

Now, in his weakened position, including the WP story and Abramoff ready to sing, Hot Tub Tom may have more enemies in the Texas Republican Party than he may have expected. And the "esteemed" appeals court judges may not want his mud in their faces. Judges are elected in Texas, and who wants to be known as someone on Tom DeLay's side when he's put in his prison whites?

113. you are correct sir
“Media reports that U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay had convinced the state’s highest court to hear his appeal were as widely circulated as they were, well, wrong. Justices for the Texas Court Criminal Appeals agreed merely to consider hearing DeLay’s money laundering case. They never said they would accept the case, said Edward Marty, the court’s general counsel. The erroneous media reports, which the San Antonio Express-News published in a wire story and displayed online, come from DeLay’s spokesman, Kevin Madden, in an e-mail sent to reporters Tuesday evening, after courts had closed for the night.”
---
DeLay's spokesman was peddling a misleading story. The appeals court will simply hear arguments to consider tom's motion to toss the case. No chance the case will be tossed this week. I updated my blog accordingly, thanks for the heads up.

Well, the first thing is that they set up a non-profit outfit, and that's non-profit for tax purposes.

And they used their funds to campaign against Democrats.

standing on Shrub's shoulders, is the big picture I hope.

Another nail in the Hammer's political coffin, we can only hope extra hard!

Tom wants to slide his repub judge trick through, under the radar, but this story puts the spotlight on the blood sucker's full court press, with the republican trick judges. If Tom has to throw himself upon the court and plead for mercy, I want it to be real tears he's crying. I'd hate to think, that any MERCY that a repub crony court would show Tommy tha Hammer, would be all bought and prepaid for.(Perry Rigged)

The public's verdict will be in on the republican judges too, in this case, if Tommy don't get Hammered.

Don't do the crimes, if you ain't got time for doin the time, Tom.

Edit...For one more thought: I hope Tom gets about 25 years in Huntsville without his body armor.

The investigation into getting money from the Chinese quietly stopped when it came to light that the money trail went back to the 1980s - when Reagan was president. Coincidentally, the Chinese first successful nuke test was in 1987, 7 years into Reagan's tenure.

What a story! Thanks for sharing....

"There is no evidence DeLay received a direct financial benefit, but Buckham's firm employed DeLay's wife, Christine, and paid her a salary of at least $3,200 each month for three of the years the group existed. Richard Cullen, DeLay's attorney, has said that the pay was compensation for lists Christine DeLay supplied to Buckham of lawmakers' favorite charities, and that it was appropriate under House rules and election law.
Some of the U.S. Family Network's revenue was used to pay for radio ads attacking vulnerable Democratic lawmakers in 1999; other funds were used to finance the cash purchase of a townhouse three blocks from DeLay's congressional office. DeLay's associates at the time called it "the Safe House.""

Whatever the real motive for the contribution of $1 million -- a sum not prohibited by law but extraordinary for a small, nonprofit group -- the steady stream of corporate payments detailed on the donor list makes it clear that Abramoff's long-standing alliance with DeLay was sealed by a much more extensive web of financial ties than previously known.

"Records and interviews also illuminate the mixture of influence and illusion that surrounded the U.S. Family Network. Despite the group's avowed purpose, records show it did little to promote conservative ideas through grass-roots advocacy. The money it raised came from businesses with no demonstrated interest in the conservative "moral fitness" agenda that was the group's professed aim."

There's also this:

"...the DeLay aide attracted media attention by returning through Paris aboard the Concorde, a $5,500 flight."

Heh. Niiiiiiiiice.

This one puts the whole thing in perspective:

"A former Abramoff associate said the two executives "wanted to contribute to DeLay" and clearly had the resources to do it. At one point, Koulakovsky asked during a dinner in Moscow "what would happen if the DeLays woke up one morning" and found a luxury car in their front driveway, the former associate said. They were told the DeLays "would go to jail and you would go to jail."

Heh.

103. Blunt worked out of the same townhouse!
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 04:09 PM by Sydnie

In the same quarter in 2000 that Blunt received a contribution from DeLay for $100,000, Blunt made a contribution to the mysterious DeLay Foundation for $10,000. Blunt's PAC also paid rent to the U.S. Family Network, yet another DeLay controlled entity.

In fact, ties were so close between the Blunt and DeLay operations, that ARMPAC, ROYB, Alexander Strategy Group--run by former DeLay staffer Ed Buckham, and the U.S. Family Network once all shared the same office space at 132 D St., SE in a DC townhouse owned by Robert Mills, a former DeLay campaign manager.--who ran the U.S. Family Network. They were forced to disperse when DC zoning officials noted that Mills had reported that only 15% of his home would be used for business purposes. (Roll Call, DeLay PAC, Consulting Firm Move Out of House, April 13, 2000. See also, ROYB campaign finance report expenditure for rent to U.S. Family Network at this address.)

<snip>

Also during Ellis' tenure with ROYB, Blunt accepted a series of contributions from clients of embattled uber-lobbyist and DeLay crony, Jack Abramoff. Blunt accepted contributions from Concorde Garment Manufacturing, a company that ran sweatshops on the Marianas Islands. In March of 2000, 8 major U.S. retailers settled a class action lawsuit for $6.5 million for working conditions in Marianas Island manufacturing facilities, including those of Concorde Manufacturing. Abramoff lobbied on behalf of various Marianas Island interests. (New York Times, 8 Retailers Settle Suit, March 29, 2000)

Blunt also accepted a contribution from Juan C. Franco. Franco was a prominent Puerto Rican businessman whose key goal was Puerto Rican statehood. Franco was also represented by Abramoff. According to a May 7, 2005 National Journal article headlined, Getting in Good With Tom and Christine, Abramoff, Franco, and interests aligned with the Marianas Islands, were also frequent golfers at DeLay's charitable events.

From this blog - http://www.firedupamerica.com/trmpac_delay_blunt

with a nice summary here - http://www.firedupamerica.com/delay_abramoff_blunt_family_network

From the post article-

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10657504/page/2/
<snip>
other funds were used to finance the cash purchase of a townhouse three blocks from DeLay's congressional office.

So .... Just who purchased that townhouse and in what name?
