THINK FIRST, SHOOT SECOND. That guy took a full blast to the face. Period
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 12:37 AM by goodboy
He's lucky he's not blind or dead. They removed 50-80 bb's from his face and neck! There aren't that many more bb's in a fuckin' .28ga! If he was 30 feet away, and using 7.5 shot, that poor dude took the whole blast to the face, and it's all DICK's responsibility.

Even the Repukes have to admit that Cheney is not "careless" or "irresponsible" He committed assault with a deadly weapon. He's guilty of misuse of a firearm, and gross negligence. Mr. Repuke Gun-Nut fucking jagoff bastard criminal even broke every single goddam NRA gun safety rule.

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

Know your target and what is beyond.
Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. (ON A SIDE NOT, DIDN'T DICK SAY "THERE IS NO DOUBT SADDAM HAS WMD'S?} Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second.

http://www.nrahq.org/education/guide.asp

ON EDIT: Think about this for a second, FOR SAFETY's SAKE, "Think first, Shoot Second"
What DICK did: SHOOT FIRST. FIGURE IT OUT LATER.

SAME AS OUR IRAQ POLICY.

28. Yeah, really...
I don't hunt, I don't even believe in it but to me it seems like calling out and announcing yourself would scare the prey off so it doesn't seem like that would be something that hunters would expect each other to do.

5. We really don't know Mr. Whittington's condition.
He could have been blinded in at least one eye. He could be in critical condition. We won't get the truth for a while, if ever.

the hospital.

Any chance we'll have a press conference from the docs taking care of the guy? Thought not.

26. You can bet that as soon as he can be made to look healthy in a photo-op
they'll be taping a perky interview. In fact, the "spokesperson" most quoted even in the NYT is hardly a credible witness. Interesting thread on this massive corporate media spin:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x400204
thread title (2-13-06 GD): A few things I've noticed about the shooting accident
Comment/excerpt: “First was the expected minimization of the incident and the downplaying of the wounds of a man who's still in intensive care. Most of these comments are from the ranch owner Katharine Armstrong, daughter of a former Halliburton director and professional Republican Pioneer bootlicker. … The true scope of Wittinton's injury is indicated in this Dallas Morning News article:
‘A friend who has talked to family members said that Mr. Whittington was hit by about 50 birdshot pellets. He underwent surgery Sunday morning to remove some of the pellets, and doctors have told his family that the shot apparently did not damage any major organs.’”

12. get this...the ranch owner said DICK's a "very safe sportsman"
"Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year and is "a very safe sportsman." She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.

"This is something that happens from time to time. You know, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

18. Should we have a DU pool?
on which media pig will first be trying to spin this on how dumb Whittington is? My guess is Beck. Which one will be going on about hateful liberals trying to capitalize on an accident? My other guess is "bowtie needs to be much tighter" Tucker Carlson. It gets easy to anticipate this shit after a while.

22. The NYT article on this makes it clear that the line is going to be
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 02:40 AM by Nothing Without Hope
"it was the victim's fault - he should have announced his presence more clearly."

Here's the article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/13/politics/13cheney.html?hp&ex=1139893200&en=ef5d2efe3efde24c&ei=5094&partner=homepage

Excerpt:

(snip)

According to Katharine Armstrong, the daughter of Anne Armstrong, Mr. Whittington broke away from a line of three hunters, including Mr. Cheney, and failed to announce that he was returning to the group. When he approached, Mr. Cheney had already begun to shoot into a covey of quail that was taking off from the ground.

"This all happened pretty quickly," Ms. Armstrong said in a telephone interview from her ranch. Mr. Whittington, she said, "did not announce — which would be protocol — 'Hey, it's me, I'm coming up,' " she said.

"He didn't do what he was supposed to do," she added, referring to Mr. Whittington. "So when a bird flushed and the vice president swung in to shoot it, Harry was where the bird was."

Mr. Whittington was "sprayed — peppered, is what we call it — on his right side, on part of his face, neck, shoulder and rib cage," she said, noting that she, too, had been sprayed on her leg in a hunting accident.

(snip)

Mr. Whittington appears to be a very sleazy character long associated with Bush in Texas. He's 78 years old, which may be a factor in his healing. The article says he's doing just fine and dandy, sitting up and "yakking."

24. No doubt. Here's a thread with an excellent take on the MEDIA SPIN on
this story - it's blatant and universal:

27. I'm betting Manly Dick was in a killing frenzy - he shot 70 tame birds
in what must have been a short time. He heard a rustle and blasted because he was so into the killing.

Like this thread says, this is more evidence (as if we needed more) that here is "something wrong" with good ole Dick:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x395842
thread title (2-0-06 GD): There's something wrong w/ Cheney -- killed 70 TAME birds in one trip
Comment/excerpt: The poster notes “In one incident that received some press coverage, Cheney and his pals had 500 farm raised pheasants -- that is, birds that had lost their fear of people -- released before them. The party killed 417 birds in one day, with Cheney bagging 70 of the tamed animals himself. This is not hunting. This is slaughter. This represents the same mental illness that caused W to kill small animals as a child. Isn't wanton killing of small animals by children a sign of mental illness and a marker for violent criminal behavior in the adult?”
