Evangelicals Launch Fight Against Climate Change
Evangelicals Launch Fight Against Climate Change

WASHINGTON -- In an effort to reduce global warming, 86 evangelical Christian leaders are calling for federal action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

All maintain that humans cause global warming and can help stop it, and that doing so is a way to care for God's creation and save the world's poor from an increase in natural disasters.

Other evangelical leaders refused to join the campaign, including Southern Baptist leader Richard Land, Focus on the Family's James Dobson, Prison Fellowship founder Charles Colson and the Rev. D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries.

They've signed a separate letter that says Christians "disagree about the cause, severity and solutions to the global warming issue."

Evangelicals urge action on global warming

"This transition will not be easy, but it is crucial to begin now," the Pew Center said. "Further delay will only make the challenge before us more daunting and more costly."

The campaign by the evangelical leaders represented a possible split in President George W. Bush's political base, in which Christian evangelical voters are heavily represented.

However, the names of most of the president's most influential Christian political backers were notably absent from the list of signatories joining the campaign. Possibly the best-known signer was Rick Warren, author of the best-selling book, "The Purpose Driven Life."

4. this is good news indeed
Rick Warren is very popular.
The Evangelicals are experiencing a rift due to a shred of sanity being expressed. The statements from those who don't agree would be hilarious if they weren't so frightening.

5. I hate to rain on this parade. . .
but I'm not comfortable with this. Notwithstanding this seemingly enlightened, and welcome, position, the odds are good that these folks will continue to vote for candidates, i.e., republicans, who will do absolutely nothing about global warming, climate issues, environmental issues, etc. On balance, this is nothing more than window dressing in an effort to gain RW votes in November.

6. Moderate evangelicals
Matt, there really are moderate evangelicals, no matter what the media stereotypes lead one to believe. There are also progressive evangelicals like Jim Wallis. Remember the hostile reception Mr. Bush got at Calvin College. Evangelicals are not a monolith.

7. They'd reduce emissions significantly
if they could just put plugs in the mouths of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.
