Style over Substance
Did anyone else listen to Barack Obama on the Tom Joyner Morning Show on yesterday?

I was really disappointed because Tom did not ask Sen. Obama a single policy question yesterday. There was a lot of good-natured joking about sports and some other stuff, but there was not a policy discussion.

That was really disappointing to me. How am I, as a voter, supposed to get to know Sen. Obama (or any other candidate, for that matter), and make up my mind on who to support, if it is all about style over substance, and they don't really lay out a policy agenda?

Also, as an African-American, I just hope that many in our community don't get too caught up in the idea of potentially having an African-American in the White House, that we fail to ask the serious questions of that person.

1. Because you, the voter, are merely expected to vote for the person
you would most like to sit down and have a beer with.

2. I Don't Have A Problem With This As I Would Like To Get To Know....
any potential president as a person.

There will be plenty of time during the next two years to learn about how and what the person thinks about the policy and political issues - but first you have to have a good feeling about the candidate as a person. Where they came from. Why they are doing what they are doing. Are they genuine. Are they a phoney.

Think about *. If we listened more about who he was as a person - he might not be sitting in the WH today. For instance:

He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He lived a charmed life. He was a cut up in school. He tortured animals. He was a drunk. He went AWOL from TANG. He was a failure in business. He didn't travel out of the country much. His daddy had to bail him out of just about every endeavor he got himself into.

It turns out today - all these things we should have learned about him as a person are really personified in the type of pResident he is today.

So yes - I want to know the backside story about Barack. I want to get a feeling as to what type of person he really is - because this person might some day be running my country. I want to know that I can trust him to do that.

3. Here's the thing....Bush was not a stranger when he came before our country
To run for President. We knew his family and his story when he announced back in 2000.

I do agree with you that it is important to know someone's story or background when they are running for office, especially President. But in the process of that, I hope we don't forget to ask the serious policy questions of that person. If we fail to do that, we could end up with buyer's remorse.
