Banks and credit card companies scrambled to notify their customers to watch for fraudulent activity after TJX Cos., parent of retailers Marshalls and T.J. Maxx, disclosed thefts of customer data from its computer system.
The New York Times identified Fifth Third Bank of Cincinnati as the sponsoring bank that handles TJX’s accounts, which makes it responsible for ensuring that the retailer met the industry’s data security standards.
“We are not in a position to confirm or deny if we do have a relationship with T.J. Maxx,” a spokeswoman for Fifth Third, Stephanie L. Honan, said.
Asked about whether all of its banks were compliant with the rules, she declined further comment.
