China is shooting down satellites.

Washington, DC (AHN) - China's decision last week to shoot down one of its ailing satellite's has left a permanent cloud of metal debris in space and spread fear on earth that the communist nation might be contemplating an arms race.

The country that invented gunpowder and fireworks fired a ground-based missile 500 miles into space on Jan. 11 and destroyed one of its aging satellites.

That test demonstrated that China's military has the capability to target U.S. spy satellites and space-based missile defense systems, as well as civilian communications satellites used by many cell phone providers.

"The U.S. believes China's development and testing of such weapons is inconsistent with the spirit of cooperation that both countries aspire to in the civil space area," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said in a press conference. "We and other countries have expressed our concern regarding this action to the Chinese."

Why now?
