VIERA - Convicted child molester Daniel Cliatt apologized to his victim, but he will serve 70 years in prison and lifelong probation for molesting a former student in 2005, a Brevard County judge decided Tuesday.

A gasp echoed through the courtroom when the attorney for the former Endeavour Elementary schoolteacher blamed the victim, arguing that the boy "was an initiator, aggressor and willing participant." The defense attorney made the startling assertion in a bid for a 20-year sentence plus lifetime probation.

The victim, however, said he initially wanted to protect Cliatt because he did not understand that the sexual relationship, which began when he was 12, was wrong.

1. Good - I think all pedophiles should be locked up forever.
The damage they do to innocent children is egregious.

2. Dear God! I hope your son was okay.
These kind of incidents are so sick and disturbing it's hard to know what to say, and so prevalent it is stunning. I fear for my two grandchildren, 12 and 9, and try to be aware of signs that they may be victims of this sort of abuse, since it crosses gender lines. I don't get it, but guess all we can do is be on guard and pray. I have mixed feelings about the 70 year sentence, but given the seriousness of the offense, perhaps justice has been served.

Blessings to you and your son.

5. He won't. Child molesters tend to get chewed up
and spat out by the other inmates.

7. Is your son young?
I'm sorry about this, but it's probably best not to tell your son about this if he is still young. It must be hard raising a kid in this shitty society.

10. He's 11 now.
The incident happened when he was in first grade.

We moved him when the school got an "F", then, the next year, Cliatt got caught with the kid in his room.

We talked about it in the car this morning after there was a report on the radio. My son said he feels indifferent to the whole thing. I'm sure he has a lot of thought about it he doesn't discuss. He said he didn't like the guy because "...he was mean to everybody."

It's an excellent lesson in criminal justice.
