-continue caucusing with the dems as an independent
-switch parties back to dem

11. politics really does make strange bedfellows

at least in the very red state area where I live. This area is ruled by republicans now, but years ago it belonged to the Democratic party. I've been doing a little research, hoping to stumble across a strategy or something that would help us flip the control again. It's impossible to discount things like momentum and tradition, but years ago the Democratic party here was very good at building voter blocks.

During prohibition, wets voted Democratic because the Democrats promised them light beer, and drys voted Democratic because the dems assured them that whiskey was evil. There were blacks that went Democratic because they were convinced the dems would support a federal anti-lynching bill, and during the same election the KKK voted dem for reasons I don't quite understand yet.

In areas like mine, we're not going to win on principle. The road to enlightenment is just to far to travel before the next election. I think we truly might be able to win by building voter blocks though, so I don't think we should exclude anyone from the party.

What difference does it make? This guy is swinging to the right of even the most conservative of conservatives. He doesn't want to even investigate Katrina and he's spearheading the push for escalation in Iraq (and probably Iran if that happens). So on what key issues are we banking on his support?
