In an interview published Tuesday in The Daily Progress of Charlottesville, Hargrove, 79, said slavery ended nearly 140 years ago with the Civil War and added that "our black citizens should get over it."

The newspaper also quoted him as saying, "are we going to force the Jews to apologize for killing Christ?"

1. Is he from Virgil Goode's district?
Sounds like they're cut from the same stock.

2. Mr. Hargrove would know when slavery ended, as a first hand witness...
:P

3. In other words, "Shut up and get back to work."
Sounds as though he's not over it yet.

4. Gee- what a surprise-- Hargrove isn't a hillbilly after all
He represents a district in Eastern Virginia which includes Hanover County and was educated in Richmond.

But go ahead and label any ignorant fuck that comes along a hillbilly, no matter where they're from. It's not like those of us who are real hillbillies haven't heard those kinds of stereotypical insults before and it's one of the bigoted slurs still acceptable on DU. :eyes:

6. I AM a gay hillbilly.... gay progressive Dem in WV
Not only that, my partner and I aren't the only gay folks on our block. The neighbors to my left are Mexican/Puerto Rican, the ones to my right and sharing a duplex are an old WV hillbilly family and an African American family with the father a practicing Muslim. My grandmother was a German Jewish refugee. So we all had a big hillbilly holiday party at our house that covered all the bases and it was great!

8. What's even more funny is that the hillbillies sided with the North
during the Civil War.

Some people are just ignorant. :hi:

(Hillbilly from East Tennessee here! Hi y'all!)

11. Hey, Clark2008! One branch of my family is from McMinn County
TN...the Brocks and the Stansburys. The Brocks stayed put and the Stansburys migrated to north Georgia in the 1870's. There's no place on earth more beautiful than the southern Appalachains. You can take the boy out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the boy...I return home for a visit at least twice a year.

12. Ah yes, the Southern Unionists!
Yes, and East Tennessee is the home of thousands of brave Union veterans. You're right about Appalachian folks fighting with the Union. It was the investors in the plantation economy of the agrarian lowlands who insisted the institution of slavery was necessary for their survival. Some folks just need a history lesson.

Hi back atcha! :hi:

7. Hillbilly Archie Bunker?
I'm sorry, sweetie, but Archie Bunker was a Yankee from Queens.

Let's not mix our stereotypes.

9. Wouldn't it be nice if racism had died with slavery?
And all those freed slaves were welcome into american society with open arms in 1865? We'd be a lot better off as a nation now, if that had been the case.

He used the wrong jewish analogy, in choosing Jesus (who was killed by the romans, after all). A more appropriate analogy to slavery would be the holocaust. I believe the saying jews have in regards to that is "Forgive, but never forget" or words to that effect.
