Great New Years revelation from wingnut
brother-in-law. Seems his unit is going to Iraq in March and
Mr. I Support the War and Everything George Bush does has decided
to resign, due to pressing "going back to school" commitment.

1. I doubt they will let him resign.
I think there is a stop-loss order in effect for the entire military. I personally hope he can get out and not have to face Hell on Earth.

7. Funny when your son went?
What does that even mean? Even if he thought it was the patriotic thing, what was funny? Your worry?

Where is your son now?
That must be just the hardest thing to face.

9. My son is home now. Did a year in Mosul.
My brother-in-law took it like it was a big joke. My son will probably be going back with the 82nd sometime this year.

24. I pity him.
We have to show mercy and forgiveness, people like your brother-in-law need it. I wonder if he even gets the irony of his situation now. I have a friend that has to go back to Iraq next year, he has been to the region 3 times now and his wife is pregnant with their second child. I expect your brother-in-law is in for a dose of reality.

20. Thanks for rubbing salt ...
... into the wound!

I can't complain, though. I live within walking distance of Lake Ontario, and have an incredible view of the downtown core from my bedroom window.

A NYC view is better than ANY view, IMHO -- but I don't live in the same country as Bush, Cheney, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Falwell, et al -- so living out-of-country sure has its privileges these days!!!!

(I still miss NY pizza more than ANYTHING, though ...)

$64 dollars round trip, plus Rochester ground transportation, plus pizza expenses. Realistically, you could grab a pizza here for about $100 USD.

... I've been off-line for a couple of hours.

Bensonhurst? I have friends there. A good friend of mine lived on Bay 34th for years, and I spent many fabulous weekends in Bensonhurst.

My first husband and I lived in San Remo (Long Island) in the 'seventies. We often hopped in the car at ten or eleven at night, and drove to Coney Island because we just HAD TO HAVE a Nathan's hot dog and fries! It took a couple of hours round-trip, but it was ALWAYS WORTH IT!

I think he thinks this is still 1968. He also thinks that it worked for Bush, Cheney, et al,
that it should work for them. Shouldn't surprise me, but it does.

Here's hoping he gets a first hand look at the sandbox! :hi:

Army allows Reserve officers to leave rather than go to war

By Gregg Zoroya, USA TODAY

Almost two-thirds of the Army officers in a special Reserve program have been allowed to resign rather than go to war, the Army has disclosed. The 265 officers are among 410 reservists who had orders that likely would have sent them to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Faced with growing unrest among soldiers called back to active duty from the rarely used Individual Ready Reserve, the Army took the unprecedented step last month of granting a way out for officers who had received orders for duty but did not want to go: They could resign.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-12-19-army-reserve_x.htm?csp=24

Not sure what his situation is, and I certainly am behind ANY soldier who decides he/she cannot consciously commit themselves to this occupation. However, it sounds like this situation is out of mere cowardess rather than a morally conscious decision to accept orders.

Now I am not sure what the situations of the officers in the aforementioned article are, or whether or not your brother-in-law qualifies to "resign" but it would appear that some people are...

I remember there was a guy here a couple months ago, Kevin something, who wouldn't go to Iraq and he's sitting in jail. I believe his length was fifteen months or so.

He can take classes on-line during his down time while he's in Iraq. And of course when he returns he'll be able to use his veterans benifits to attend school.

When he arrives in Iraq, tell him I'll send him a care package of pencils & paper.

Why did he think it was funny for your son to serve in Iraq? :grr:  :grr:

early from the Army just because there's a CHANCE he might be shipped to Iraq, even though some inside have told him how unlikely it would be.

He's a Sergeant in a logistics position, working a desk in PA. HIs job involves putting units together and determining if they have all the right equipment before they go. He has no other job lined up yet, and he's not old enough to be truly retired. But he's got the chance to go based on his years of service; they're not stopping his retirement. The papers have been approved and processed already.

So, despite his support of Bush and all that, he's not taking a chance (however slim) on his ass winding up in Iraq. He's heading for the exit, just like your B-I-L. Can't put their bodies where their words go, ever.

"Patriotic War" to set the Iraqi's free and protect us so "we don't have to fight them here", seem to be the first ones to bail out when they are called upon to sacrifice a relatively small part of their lives. Always so much easier to get someone else to do the fighting...

If he is a coward before he gets into the heat of battle, it is better that he lives out his cowardice in a classromm. He would be a direct theat to those he would serve with, for a coward can get everyone killed or maimed, and somehow come out of it unscathed.

I am willing to bet he sucked up the Swift Boat crap, hook, line and sinker as well...:grr:

33. Is your brother-in-law a commissioned officer?
If so, he could be forced to serve the rest of his life.

If not, he has a contractual committment which, I believe, is curently covered under stop-loss which means, he can't get out.
