'Scooter' Libby Trial Could Be a High-Profile Bloodletting
Former Cheney Chief of Staff on Trial for Allegedly Lying to a Grand Jury, Not Outing CIA Agent

Jan. 16, 2007 — Jury selection begins today in the trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.

Libby is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice in the leaking of the identity of a former CIA operative.

Libby is on trial for allegedly lying to a grand jury about the source of a leak that outed former CIA operative Valerie Plame. Plame's identity was leaked to the media after her husband, former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson, was critical of the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq.

Libby has been called a master of discretion, and the trial promises to be a high-profile bloodletting. It will pit senior White House officials against senior vice presidential staffers as well as vice presidential aides against prominent journalists.

3. It doesn't matter that he wasn't charged with "outing"
The public will perceive it that way anyway. I hope it gets a lot of attention on the nightly news and in newspapers/magazines, but am not holding my breath.

4. Not much here - hope I'm wrong.
Once again we will hope for the best here but at this point it's not likely to happen.
It would appear that the high crime that as committed in this case will go unpunished.
This case could of - and should have - brought this administration down. Instead we get the relatively low level case of obstruction. Does anyone really think that Libby will sing?
I hope so, but I don't expect much.
Nice job, Fitz.

11. I think you're wrong. Especially given where the public is on the war issue.
Prosecutors hope to show that the vice president and his staff had an organized campaign to leak negative stories about Plame and her husband.

Legal implications aside, this administration will not be able to get traction for the Republican Party in 08, with the trial going on. Also, they are going to face oversight hearings that will surely complicate the agenda.

7. At least someone in the M$M is admitting
that this isn't just another special investigation that is going nowhere and all they got is one guy for lying and there's no substance to the case. That is what most of the M$M is claiming.
