"Some of my best friends are American..."
A self-financed short film shot in Auckland in a single day has scooped the top prize in an acclaimed online competition.

Some Of My Best Friends Are American, made by former ‘Queer Nation’ presenter Max Currie and Kelly Mitchell, is the first NZ film to be entered in the Huffington Post’s Contagious Festival. It was deliberately timed to coincide with the US elections, in which voters in eight states decided on gay marriage law reform.

The short spoof is a fake news item about a bizarre law change in New Zealand. If the law is passed, it would ban Americans from marrying each other on New Zealand soil.

The film’s writer/director Max Currie is delighted with the win, “With over 40 entrants in November’s competition, we’re pleased to make the top 10. There were two prizes up for grabs. There’s the people’s choice, being the entry that received the most unique views. But we won the jury prize, selected by a panel of judges which includes Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor of the Huffington Post and Nora Ephron Academy Award-nominated Writer and Director. We’re pretty stoked!”
