U.S. Navy nuclear submarines maintaining vigil off the coast of Iran indicate that the Pentagon’s military plans include not only control over navigation in the Persian Gulf but also strikes against Iranian targets, a former commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Eduard Baltin has told the Interfax news agency.

“The presence of U.S. nuclear submarines in the Persian Gulf region means that the Pentagon has not abandoned plans for surprise strikes against nuclear targets in Iran. With this aim a group of multi-purpose submarines ready to accomplish the task is located in the area,” Admiral Baltin said.

He made the comments after reports that a U.S. submarine collided with a Japanese tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.

“American patience is not unlimited,” he said. “The submarine commanders go up to the periscope depth and forget about navigation rules and safety measures,” the admiral said.

1. WTF? How much buzz is this going to get?
I count now 4 different countries leaking this info... if this is a masquerade by the Pentagon it might be working too well. If it's not... buckle up.

2. I am sick at heart Jcrowley
Tomorrow is today

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

5. Bear in mind that all US subs are nuclear
That is not clear is if the ones being discussed are attack boats or boomers.

13. U.S. submarines
our attack boats have a limited land attack capability. Several of our old boomers have been converted to quantities of Tomahawk missiles. Tomahawks come in either a conventional or nuke flavor.

10. Russian nuclear forces, 2005
NRDC: Nuclear Notebook

By Robert S. Norris and Hans M. Kristensen
March/April 2005 pp. 70-72 (vol. 61, no. 02) © 2005 Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

"There were several key quantitative and qualitative developments with regard to Russian nuclear forces during the past year. <1> Russia continued to reduce its nuclear forces, and officials were unusually candid in describing the likely composition of forces for the coming decade. We estimate that as of early 2005, Russia has approximately 7,200 operational nuclear warheads in its active arsenal. This includes about 3,800 strategic warheads, a decrease of some 400 from 2004 due to the withdrawal of approximately 60 ballistic missiles from operational service. Our estimate of operational non-strategic nuclear weapons remains unchanged from last year at 3,400.
At the end of the Cold War in 1991, the Soviet Union may have had as many as 35,000 nuclear weapons--though not all of them were fielded. Estimates of the dismantlement rate vary widely, from hundreds to 1,000-2,000 per year. We estimate that the total current arsenal of intact warheads is around 16,000...

14. They are supplying Iran with Defensive weapons such as missiles and anti-aircraft
radar equipment. They are also not following the sanctions and are doing normal business with iran as is China. They have signed a strategic arms pact with Iran and China as well. Will they actually go to war against the USA, I doubt it, but they certainly will aid and abet all those that do...

7. I think the Senate and House need to stage a walk-out
All honest Senators, Congressmen and Congresswomen, of either party, need to stop conducting any further business and walk out of the Congress. They then need to march to the White House, demanding public assurances on behalf of the American people that the President will not defy their unique authority to declare war. The American people cannot tolerate another instant the possibility of a madman starting World War III.
