Flesh-eating bug killed top economist in 24 hours

A leading economist suffered an agonising death when a horrific flesh-eating bug took over his body in just 24 hours.

Doctors watched helplessly as David Walton, 43, was struck down by necrotising fasciitis.

Mr Walton was a member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, which is responsible for setting interest rates.

Following his death last June, Chancellor Gordon Brown called him one of the UK’s leading business economists and a highly respected commentator on economic affairs.

He joined investment bank Goldman Sachs in 1987, where he became its Chief European Economist.

In June 2005, he became a policy maker on the Bank of England’s rate-setting committee.

3. It's a strep bacteria, scary
It is most commonly transferred by respiratory droplets or direct contact with secretions of someone carrying Strep A. For instance, a person carrying a Strep A bacteria might not even show symptoms or become ill at all. They cough or sneeze, another person picks up the bacteria on their hands or directly at the point of a wound and the infection occurs. The NF patient is not likely to be contagious, and inanimate objects are unlikely to be points of transmission.

11. You mean the same bacteria that causes strep throat?

12. Yes, Strep was going around my son's preschool. Infect Disease Dr said
~30% of all folks are carriers at any given time and that it was just bad luck.

5. This is off-topic, but how is CorpGovActivist doing?
I know you're a friend of his, and we've been a little concerned because we haven't heard from him in a while.

7. I have heard about that flesh-eating bacteria
Someone in our area got it, and rapidly declined, and was dead in couple days. I've always wondered where this bacteria comes from, and it seems to be totally resistant to antibiotics. Very strange Walton got it, but I doubt he was setup.

8. Apparently, he had differing viewpoints from the rest of the Monetary Policy Committee
He was the only member who wanted to increase interest rates.
