At the prayer breakfast:
"In our country, we recognize our fellow citizens are free to profess any faith they choose, or no faith at all. You are equally American if you're a Hebrew -- a Jew or a Christian or Muslim. You're equally American if you choose not to have faith. It is important America never forgets the great freedom to worship as you so choose. (Applause.)"
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/02/20060202.htmlThat's clumsy, isn't it? Not to go all PC, but it's a big part of his job, and the job of those around him, to learn a little about what he's going to say, and it's disgraceful that they don't.
When he went all home spun yesterday and said "let me put it to you in Texan heh heh", I remembered a scene from an old West Wing. The fictitious pres was racing down some halls and up some stairs to a speaking event after a tragedy. He had no prepared remarks, and on the fly, Sam (the speech writer), tossed him a piece of a verse: "Joy cometh in the morning, sir" and Bartlett built the most healing, inspiring remarks, around that phrase.
sigh. I know...just pretend. But "...in Texan"? bigger sigh.
