War is a failure of diplomacy.
Some lessons that are never learned:

Don't ever go to war with other cultures unless your survival is at stake. Witness the examples of Vietnam and Iraq.

Don't ever go to war with another country that has an alien or different religion. You can never win a religious war.

Don't ever go to war as a choice. War should be the final option and only when your survival is threatened.

Don't ever go to war unless the country supports the mission whole-heartedly. When millions are marching in the streets against the war, heed the message.

1. Diplomacy was not practiced in this particular instance
Bush delegated the duties of the State Department to the Pentagon. No Middle East envoy was sent to Baghdad to negotiate or broker an agreement.

This Administration completely overshot State and went straight to DoD.

3. My take is that war is in fact an extreme form of diplomacy.
And I agree with the rest of what you said. Pushing the button should only be done when there is no other choice and the consequences of not pushing it are too great.

7. Culture wars are unwinnable
You cannot kill people into seeing things your way. They need to be alive to do that. You can kill off the people that do not see things your way. But in the end that becomes genocide and the Nazis tried it already.

13. Americans tried it to, we were just more successful in the long term
And because of that success, we now live in a world somehow ruled by law. So apparently, genocide and slavery aren't always bad. America wouldn't exist without them. Crazy world.
