36. "Author" of Liberty -- which is a reference to Jefferson and the Declaration
Not saying it's not pandering to the base, but it was Jefferson who said we are endowed by our Creator with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

84. "Author of Liberty" otherwise known as God...
Bush has used this before and the assumption was that it was a reference to God or The Creator. There are other references, unrelated to GWB of "Author of Liberty" in assocation with the Almighty as well. Found nothing to make me think it was associated with Jefferson.

In any case, the likely clincher is that it's from the following hymn: America "My Country, 'Tis of Thee... ...Our fathers' God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing"

Just George sending his semi-obscure holy wink/wink, nod/nod to that part of his base.

49. I didn't think so.
He kept blaming the Iraqis for not taking control of their country. It is like blaming the victim. I'm waiting for one, just one politician to bring up the oil and the bases and the embassy and tell the truth about what is going on. Not more nonsense about how we are there to help the poor Iraqis gain democracy and how naughty they are for not taking control of things after WE are the ones who trashed their country, destroyed their infrastructure, stole their oil, and murdered 600,000 of them. IMHO Durbin was weak.

... his audience is the Average American. I know plenty of them. Many are quite smart but DON'T HAVE A CLUE.

The Dems have to convince THEM that the war is "over". Telling them the truth? I know you won't believe me but think about it - Americans CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH.

At least not all in one bite. 10, 20 years from now, everyone will understand - "history will be his judge". Right now, we have to end this stupid war and the best way to do it is to sway public opinion with the angles that will actually work.

56. Nothing has changed!
Bush proposes more of the same with more troops and an escalating confrontation with Iran.

The only new elements were:
* 20,000 more troops
* A do-over with Iraq reconstruction with promises to get it right this time.
* Promises that the Iraqi government will govern in the Iraqi national interest.
* Apparently, succeeding in Iraq means taking on Iran and keeping it from going 'nucular'.

Otherwise, Bush wants to continue the same fight against the "terrorists and insurgents" as always.
Iraq is still the model of democracy for the Middle East and America is still fighting them
over there to prevent terrorist attacks over here.

He no doubt practiced the speech, but it was nevertheless a labored reading. His rhythmic recitation added little to the prepared text and his occasional emphasis did not convey authority, confidence, or authorship. He appeared tired and almost pleading.

83. I so agree. He's not the brush haulin', swaggerin' Mission Accomplished
dude anymore. He looks like a scared, in-over-his-head, about to puke in the toilet silver-spooned little rich kid.

72. Sen. Warner gives Rumsfeld an A for effort...
He says we haven't been attacked since 9-11 so Rumsfeld's tour of duty was a great success!
Buhahahahahahaha!

Does it sound to anyone else like the real plan here is to WIDEN THE WAR to include Iran and Syria?

75. He's just buying time and trying to give corporations reasons to support
hawkish republicans. He has no use for approval ratings. He needs to do just enough (read: give corporations enough reason to continue to give dollars to a few republicans to support war and oppose impeachment) to get through the next two years as dictator.

Anything pertinent has already been said to Halliburton, Exxon, Saudi's and the rest....this was cover for a few republicans.

80. There is a savage joy in seeing George W. Bush crash and burn...
I have to share this little video with everyone yet again:

America is the inmate. Bush is the keeper. Figure it out.
