Almost like he's mocking the Gulf Coast, or maybe trying to make people think of something other than "storm" when they hear "surge?"

As attentive as these folks are to words and the reactions of focus groups to them, I can't believe it never occured to them.

1. I *hear* it as a big wave of death coming at people
just pounding them and pounding them...washing them away

Hurricane Bush.

4. He doeesn't have the linguistic skills to choose a one syllable word
over another.

But it sure does tell you how tone deaf his handlers are.

5. Of course it did.
As someone else here said, "surge" also has sexual meaning. But the planning for Iraq all along has been the planning for after a natural disaster like Katrina. Their denial is so bizarre, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they see our soldiers as a form of hurricane, surging over the land, but just an act of God, nothing to get mad about or anything.

6. It's already been reported..."surge" is meant to convey masculinity
It isn't an accident. Rove thought "surge" sounded manly and tough. That's the only reason behind it...to play the people once again.

Meant to hide what's really going on. It doesn't really describe the situation, does it.

12. Put Escalate In A Word Document And Go To Tools - Language - Thesaurus.....
you get the following words: rise - growth - boom - appreciation - increase - climb - acceleration - intensification.

Now do the same for 'surge' and you get the following words: rush - rush forward - flow - pour - gush - course - heave - pitch - swell - rise - well up - flood - stream - spill over - spill out.

Now do the same for rise and you get: go up - increase - climb - mount - get higher - ascend - augment - grow - escalate - levitate.

The common word that ties escalate and surge together is: Rise

I'm sure Rove played with the Thesaurus function in word until he found a word that sounded good and * could easily pronounce. If he continued in his quest to find the appropriate word he would also have found the following:

Put in boom from the escalate grouping and you get: explosion - rumble - detonation - shot.

Put in climb from the rise grouping and you get: scramble - clamber

Put in scramble and you get: mess up

This is where I think * is heading.

13. There's a great cartoon on the Washington Post's site today about the choice of 'surge'.

Cheney is answering Chimpy's question, "Why the word 'surge'?"

"Because sending more troops to die for ill-defined goals in a bloody civil war that most Americans don't support" was too long."

16. Well,
I experienced Wilma's surge last year here in the Keys. That word has nothing but negative going for it. It brings back bad memories for plenty of people and sadly, will mean much worse to many more very soon.

Just as No Child Left Behind means untold amounts of kids are being left behind academically in schools that are mandated to teach to the test at the expense of kids really learning much of anything. :grr:

One of the most evil things about * & Co is how they twist, spin and misuse the English language. :puke:
