Gary Hart: We Don't Need A Military Surge, We Need - A CITIZEN SURGE - To Restore The Constitution
Gary Hart

01.09.2007
A Surge of Constitutionalism

The endless Iraq war is decreasingly about Iraq and increasingly about the U.S. Constitution.

President Bush's decision to escalate the war, and to further Americanize it, is based on his flawed and dangerous theory of the "unitary presidency," a theory under which, once war is declared, the president as commander in chief can ignore constitutional checks and balances, disregard the bill of rights, suspend accountability, and concentrate dictatorial power in his own hands.

History has already judged the invasion and occupation of Iraq as an American disaster of epic proportions. But an even more important judgment remains to be made. What damage has been done to the U.S. Constitution and our form of government in the name of the "war on terrorism" as cover for a secret neo-conservative agenda in the Middle East?

..................

Surely now even the most cynical neo-conservative is prepared to declare victory. We destroyed all those weapons of mass destruction that Richard Cheney knew existed. Iraq is no longer an imminent threat to U.S. national security, not that it ever was. We have rid ourselves of the tyrant S. Hussein (though it was never quite clear why he, among several dozen tyrants, deserved our special attention), and we have give the Iraqi people freedom, which they are now using to kill each other.

............

Needed now is not a surge of military forces. Needed now is a surge of citizen commitment to restore the Constitution of the United States of America.

3. I agree, but the American people are like spoiled brats who refuse to do their chores ...
... but whine interminably. It's about damned time we did our chores ... even if with tar and feathers.

My torch and pitchfork have been ready to go since December 12, 2000. :grr:

14. Mine, also. I remember that night so well. I had a VERY VERY bad
feeling but couldn't put my finger on it. It was just bad. One of those "uh-oh... here's trouble." I had that once before and was correct then, also (on a FAR, FAR lesser, and personal scale). But I didn't think it would wind up being THIS bad. And here I was worried that Roe v Wade would wind up being overturned. NEVER did I dream...

7. No he wouldn't.
Like Clinton, Gary Hart has the one problem that makes him morally unqualified for the presidency. He likes sex...with WOMEN!!

Just in case it may be necessary :sarcasm:

31. LOL. But hey, Gingrich and Henry "hydeinplainsight" as
well as Sen. Livingstone. The three casting the largest stones at Clinton, all were having extra-marital affairs.
It seems only dems who have sex with women are bad.

15. I totally agree.
For my part, I never miss an opportunity to publicly (in grocery lines, etc.) de-spin some of the major lies of this present time. I never miss an opportunity to point out what a sociopathic POS the monkeyboy-who-occupies-the-White House is.

And, I've developed a new litmus for getting to the truth. Being a folk musician of sorts, I tell people that I've recently discovered The Dixie Chicks (true). And that I never would have paid them any mind until "the event." (true) And now, I think they are freaking great as musicians (true) and as statespeople (true).

We'll just see who's who, based on people's reactions....

Let's go, America. Raise your voices. Uncover the nitwits AND the truth tellers.

20. I laughed out loud at the dark humor:
. . .and we have give the Iraqi people freedom, which they are now using to kill each other. . .

I know it's gallows humor, but the irony is delicious and the statement is so deadly accurate that I had to LOL.

The insurgents are also using that freedom to kill our young men and women and we need to bring the troops home ASAP.

Our soldiers are in harms way to protect W's sick ego and the future profits of big oil. These aren't valid reasons to use the military. What we have now is BushCo's abuse of the military for corporate greed.

21. Before this disaster began, a repuke acquaintance
told me we "have to get rid of Saddam." My response was that getting rid of Saddam would lead to chaos and civil war, and the person we had to fear most was Bush. He laughed at me. I'll bet he isn't laughing now.

Constitutional crisis.

Of course I've always beleived we were in one but the dems had to get a majority to have their voices heard.
