Geraldo wants to fight Keith Olbermann
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 10:42 PM by RedEarth
Geraldo wants to fight Keith Olbermann

During a radio appearance, Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera called MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann “a coward — specifically a ‘(female part of the anatomy) who wouldn’t walk across the street against the red light.’ He then said he was ready to fight him, saying: ‘I would make a pizza out of him.‘” Geraldo has previously attacked Olbermann as a “lowlife” and a “schmuck,” and said Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert “exist in a small little place where they count for nothing.”

8. Trying to boost ratings and please Fox to get screen time and keep income
Fox loves to keep people distracted from the life and death issues we face so they can keep making the big money....sort of like those wrestling shows.

Best to ignore anything he says so that he will disappear.

Decades ago Rivera and Imus (who new to NYC radio at the time) used to talk each other up to boost their careers. This is an old game and I hope KO doesn't play it. I like to believe he is authentic.

Second why don't you tuck that little one inch back into your pants and go draw some troop movements in the dirt you moran. Third if it's a fight you are looking for just go criticize a Uwe Boll movie. We are too busy trying to save your country.

I'm also very tired of "female part of the anatomy" as a slur.

I am also tired of "girl" being a slur.

Women will not ever be "equal" as long as we are viewed by men as inferior. The use of female terms to degrade males demonstrates their notion that "female = inferior." I am sick of it.

All you're doing is trying to control speech.

If you are never offended by anything, you aren't living in a free society.

If you are offended by everything, you might want to lighten up a bit, because you'll never be happy in this world.

69. To reiterate the point...
from my post that you obviously neglected to read...you can say whatever you want...the right to free speech means that I can then turn around and call you on your bullshit. People who whine about political correctness are the ones who really don't believe in free speech because they want to be able to be an asshole without having to put up with people calling them on it. If you really believe in free speech, then you can't whine when you say something sexist (or racist or whatever) and people exercise their right to call you an asshole.

76. A Common Malady I Fear
I think intent is a missing variable in many of these discussions. When an insult is obviously NOT intended, i think the outrage is misplaced and is wholly unproductive. It fractures alliances when disagreement is elevated over an abstraction not intended to insult.

78. When an insult is not intended...
but the person insulted tells you what you said was insulting...a decent human being apologizes and then does not repeat the behavior/comment. Conversely, when someone tells someone else they've said something offensive...and the offender proceeds to tell the offended to "lighten up" or goes on a rant about "political correctness" and their right to say whatever they want...you can pretty much write that person off as an immature, self-centered asshole.

You apply offense where none was meant, and then demand an apology, and for the offender to change the slang phrases they use. Who is the self centered one?

The most ironic thing about this whole deal is that the person was comparing a real journalist to a fake one, and the example they used for the real journalist was a woman! Real sexist there... Totally offensive....

Do you not get why people might roll their eyes when a woman journalist is praised for having "balls"? Especially in a thread in response to one male journalist denigrating another male journalist as a "pussy"?

If you go back and read what I have actually posted, particularly my first post in this thread, you will note that I never told anyone what they can and cannot say. I merely pointed out that our language is still filled with not-so-subtle sexism and that those of you demanding the right to say whatever you want seem to have a very thin skin when other people exercise that same right to call you on your bullshit.

You're free to rage against every tiny thought crime that offends you, and attempt to subvert free speech.

I'm free to value free speech, and the right to use whatever language a person feels like, even if it offends some.

We won't ever agree on this.

Have a nice day.

leave a lot to be desired. I won't tell you, yet again, to read what I've actually posted because it's obvious at this point that you either haven't and don't intend to, or if you have that it just isn't sinking in for you.

Small words and then I'm done. I don't think you actually believe in free speech for everyone. You believe in your own right to say whatever you want...but not other people's right to tell you off over it. This is unfortunately not uncommon...even on DU.

Have a nice life.

57. Back in 1986, Geraldo had a TV special about the
opening of Al Capone's secret vault, which after much hype, turned out to be empty.

http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/R/htmlR/riverageral/riverageral.htm

Rivera was undaunted by his altercation with the network and moved to boost his visibility with a hour-long special on the opening of Al Capone's secret vault in April 1986. The payoff for the audience was virtually nil since the vault contained only dirt, but the show achieved the highest ratings for a syndicated special in television history. Rivera wrote in his autobiography, "My career was not over, I knew, but had just begun. And all because of a silly, high-concept stunt that failed to deliver on its titillating promise."

59. Oh, that one was hilarious and sad at the same time
The network (ABC?) had been running promos about Al Capone's long lost and never opened safe, reported to contain (variously) millions in paper currency, gold bars, his diary detailing all his nefarious activity, the famous second set of Mafia books, and so on and so forth. The hype was intense.

Came the big night, they dragged it out and tried to build it all up, and BAM! came the final moment, the safe was drilled open and....wait for it...the safe was ...... EMPTY!

I'm surprised he ever got enough of the egg off his face to show himself in public, let alone on right wing TV. His credibility as a reporter was totally shot after that, sad for somebody who'd had a decent reputeation and who had allowed himself to be talked into doing tabloid crap for ratings.

(and no, I wasn't glued to the set. I was at a friend's house and her husband was glued to the set)

I remember hearing Vonnegut on a talk show many years ago calling Geraldo Rivera a punk and wanting to fight him. Apparently, Geraldo was previously married to Kurt Vonnegut's daughter and engaged in continuous cheating on her and verbal abuse. I'm not sure what the details are, but Vonnegut writes about his daughter's bad marriage to Geraldo in the chapter of a Vonnegut book entitled "Fates Worse Than Death". I can imagine that being married to Geraldo WOULD be a "fate worse than death".

35. Rivera is a trained fighter. I don't know if Keith Olbermann has any fight
training, but I haven't heard anything about it. It doesn't seem very impressive for a trained boxer to challenge an untrained person to a fight!

37. The only time Keith ever fought is beating up a bully in grade school.
He "went Ralphie" (as in A Christmas Story) on a bully who made fun of him. And his mom even showed up just like in the movie. He's told the story a few times.

But he was joking on Dan Patrick's radio show about this. Said that all he'd have to do to beat Geraldo is sit on him.

38. I highly doubt KO needs to be worried
In fact I'm pretty sure I could beat up Geraldo and the last fight I had was with a baby possum in the back yard last summer and I lost (by virtue of screaming and running away.)

Even if Geraldo is actually "a trained fighter" he would be too busy striking manly poses (similar to the manly war correspondent poses he struck while in Afghanistan) to actually throw a punch. Partciularly if there were cameras present.

"If Geraldo makes a pizza out of him, I'm picking up the phone and ordering one large KO with everything."

Delivered to my door!

I for one am getting sick of all the talk from these bloviating idiots. If they want to fight someone so bad, why don't they just do it.

Talk, Talk, Talk, Threaten, Threaten, Threaten, Posture, Posture, Posture, Chest-Beat, Chest-Beat, Chest-Beat.

Christ, if you people want to fight so badly, quit all the fucking talk and bring it on.

Because quite honestly, I can no longer say it is a bad thing for most of these people to be beaten into oatmeal. I know that does not play well to our crowd, but for God Sake.

Is it going to be necessary for all of us to arm ourselves, because these people are becoming clinically insane, and violently unhinged?

Perhaps the only thing that will make it NOT come to that is that 99% of these idiots are pant-shitting cowards who could never hope to prevail in an actual confrontation.

47. It pains me to say it but I was watching Scarborough tonight in complete agreement with Joe
He was really taking it out on Geraldo and O'Reilly for their senseless bashing of MSNBC and their shilling for the Bush administration. Don't get me wrong, I know Joe's no saint considering he voted for Bush himself, but at least he realizes when it's time to jump ship.

52. The Bloviator

To speak pompously.

This word is almost entirely restricted to the United States; it doesn’t appear in any of my British English dictionaries, not even the big Oxford English Dictionary or the very recent New Oxford Dictionary of English. Yet it has a long history.

It’s most closely associated with U S President Warren Gamaliel Harding, who used it a lot and who was by all accounts the classic example of somebody who orates verbosely and windily. It’s a compound of blow, in its sense of “to boast” (also in another typical Americanism, blowhard), with a mock-Latin ending to give it the self-important stature that’s implicit in its meaning.

The word is actually much older than Harding; Fred Shapiro of the Yale Law School has recently turned up several examples from the middle of the last century, such as this one from the Debates and Proceedings of the Convention for the Revision of the Constitution of the State of Ohio in 1851: “The bloviators attempt to disturb the proceedings of this Convention”. This and other examples suggest it was at first a local word in Ohio, Harding’s home state. Bloviate may be a back-formation from the noun bloviation. This would fit with the US fashion in the early nineteenth century for expansive mock-Latinate words like sockdolager, hornswoggle and absquatulate.

There’s a gap in the citation record in the middle years of this century. The word only began to be used again in the 1960s, even then at first always in reference to Harding. This may be linked with a number of biographies of him that appeared about that time. The word only returned to any sort of regular use in the nineties.

54. Textbook Example Of Projection
To whit: "Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert “exist in a small little place where they count for nothing.” Let's be serious! Rivera has been a laughingstock for 20 years, and he thinks Stewart and Colbert count for nothing?

What a tool?

BTW: Olbermann would kick his ass. Rivera is all talk, no walk. Always has been.

Ain't that something we hear from Geraldo right after his show is cancelled:

http://www.thestar.com/artsentertainment/article/167988

The dude's all but worn out his welcome at Faux and has nowhere left to go. He's gonna "take one for the team" here...sucking up to Ailes and Murdoch so they "give him one more chance".

Gotta give Geraldo credit, he keeps reinventing shit and getting paid for it.

71. Geraldo is proving his lack of intelligence
You would think that after the way he got ripped by both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert (which was hilarious) he would have learned his lesson by now. I am sure that Olbermann will have something appropriately scathing to say in return. We are talking about the same idiot that gave away troop movements in Iraq after all and got kicked out. I have a friend who told me many a time that true stupidity is making the same mistake over and over again....

86. Geraldo wins.
because people are actually talking about him. And that's all he really wants. He's following the lead of Trump and Rosie. Get a feud going and even a has-been poser like Geraldo gets the attention of worthy people.
This just shows how powerful Olberman is becoming.
I mean, cunning Geraldo wouldn't pick someone on the decline, now would he?
He's become the Tonya Harding of journalism.

I hope that KO won't allow himself to be used by Geraldo like Rosie continues to be used by The Donald. Who-raldo is so over. He has always been a whore, and likes to rub shoulders with the power elite in Washington. I remember his show on CNBC (when I could still stand to look at him) he was a staunch Clinton supporter, and had a relatively decent following on the left. When he switched sides, he was welcomed by the right, but do you think they really trust him?

If Keith just lets this die, it won't be long before Mr. Rivers will soon follow in the disastrous footsteps of predecessors like Dennis Miller, Ron Silver, Rita Cosby, et al. Fox News Channel, the last bastion of scoundrels.
