Impeachment? In principle, this is the constitutional fix for removing these people from office.

But impeachment takes time. (Time we may not have.) Investigations and hearings must be held, and even if the House votes for impeachment, there aren't enough votes in the Senate to find Bush and Cheney guilty as charged.

In the meantime, we have these two unstable people with their fingers on the buttons of our nuclear arsenal.

So do we let two madmen possibly destroy the planet? Beats me. Any suggestions as to how we can wrest power from them before they do anything more insane than they've already done?

Their excesses, like the excesses of the guilded age, can be learned from and solved - our taking this kind of action would smash the system.

12. Only a fool plays in a rigged game.
The legal means of investigation and impeachment has absolutely no chance for success. Does anyone honestly think that the pukes will abandon Chimpy and the Dick? No way in hell.

The assholes will serve out their terms and retire to the land of even-more obscene wealth. We are stuck with them until the bitter end and the only hope is to minimize the damage that they do.

That with diligence, hearings, and investigations - the BushCo regime can be brought to justice for lies that led us into war.

"The legal means of investigation and impeachment has absolutely no chance for success."

What if thats how folks felt about Nixon? He was eventually brought to his knees and resigned in disgrace. At one point in time, he was also surrounded by a cadre of pukes.

The truth is out there and I believe eventually Bush/Cheney will be held accountable for their crimes as addressed here:

6. I'm not trolling for anything. It's simply a dilemma for which I'm damned if I
have an answer.

What I'm really hoping for is that enough Republicans still care enough about our country that they'll vote with Dems to impeach them and throw them out into the street.

And I further hope that they will both be brought to trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Your suggestion that I'm seeking mob violence is way off base. And furthermore, anyone stupid enough to pursue such an avenue would be shot down in the streets (ala Kent State).

8. That's good, but the founding fathers did not design other solutions
They meant, short of extreme measures, for leaders to be replaced through the course of regular elections. I feel like sometimes people need to be reminded of that. The system was stacked against the constant calls for impeachment by intent.

They will go away in two years. I hate seeing a lot of energy going toward this. There are so many other things to work on. If there was any real chance to impeach him that would be one thing but there isn't. NONE. ..and there are many pressing issues to work on. ...like winning the Presidency in 2008.

I don't think they cared for the past six years, so I won't bet on them helping out. They talk like they care about this country, but they don't back it up. They don't even want to pay their taxes during this endless war.

3. The only thing we can hope for is a public outcry, demanding their resignations.
With the new Democratic controlled Congress, checks and balances will be restored. This will open the door to hearings, investigations, etc.

You are correct that impeachment will take a very long time, but it is a process that must be done nevertheless. Of course, there's always the possibility that we uncover so many of Bush and Cheney's dirty deeds that even the Republicans (who have to run for reelection), ask for them to resign and leave office.

It could happen, if public outcry is strong enough and loud enough, it will be every Congress person for themselves, to hell with the party!

They will do what they have to do to get reelected.

I suggested exploring the merits of removing Shrub as mentally unfit to serve. Of course, debating the realistic chances of that happening is another thing. I think lots has to do with to what degree folks see him as truly a "madman" (with no sarcasm). We're talking certifiably personality disordered batshit crazy. IMHO, he's there.

25. the problem with the "mentally unfit" approach
is that it requires chimpy to remove himself or for Cheney and a majority of chimpy's cabinet to publicly assert that he's not fit.

Ain't gonna happen. And if it did, you'd still have Cheney.

You are proposing, in a backhand manner, either an assassination or a coup d'etat, both of which are acts of treason.

Quite simply put, any "option" that is not Constitutional is not an option. Any "suggestions" to "wrest power from them" (other than impeachment, which you have dismissed) amount to conspiracy to commit treason. If I were you, I would simply let this thread die, and think twice before I decided to again engage in such irresponsible discourse.

17. You couldn't be more wrong. See post #7. What I am seeking is a
sane way to get these madmen out of office.

Perhaps I'm stupid enough to believe that there are millions of Republicans who hate what has happened to our country as do the rest of us. (And maybe I'm a fool for believing so.)

But I am in no way advocating assassination, or a coup d'etat. I believe that either of these actions would do far more damage to our country than Bush/Cheney are currently doing.

31. So what's your plan?
There is exactly one Constitutional recourse. It is impeachment. You have admitted that the legal means of removing the administration is impeachment, and have declared it unacceptably slow. This leaves only non-Constitutional means of removing the administration.

Protest is ineffective, especially for such a goal, and especially when Bush still can count a third of the populace in his camp. Any hope that a demonstration of peaceful support would remove Mr. Bush is simply wishful thinking. With the legal force of impeachment and the legal public recourse of demonstration and petition off the table, you have very few options remaining. These are:

1. Assassination.
2. Coup d'etat.
3. Civil war.
4. Blackmail/extortion.

Which of these are acceptable? Or if I have missed one, what is it?

Oh, and post 7 doesn't seem to have anything to do with what you said. It isn't even by you.

35. Sorry, it was post #6. And I don't accept your premise that I am suggesting

unconstitutional means for removing these lunatics.

In short, I don't have the answer of how to get it done. Nonetheless, I still believe that leaving these two thugs in office for the next two years presents us with an unacceptable degree of danger.

My OP is actually more of a question than an implied course of action. If you have anything useful to contribute in answer to this question fine.

But you have now twice implied that I'm trying to incite assassination and/or a coup d'etat. And the second time you added civil war and blackmail/extortion. I have suggested none of these. Nonetheless, I'm still hoping that someone can come up with a way of removing these thugs from office. Every moment they are there is one more moment of peril for all of us.

So instead of making accusations about what you believe to be going on in my mind, how about focusing on the dilemma I've set forth.

On edit: If you're correct, and impeachment is the only path open to us, then I believe we are all screwed. The closest I can come to some sort of solution is a Republican backlash. They've got to realize that Bush/Cheney are leading them into a bottomless sewer. Assuming there are enough sane Republicans left, perhaps they can convince our "Decider" and "Vice Decider" to resign. It's not something for which I hold much hope, but you never know.

How can people predict the votes in the Senate without even holding the necessary investigations and impeachment proceedings?

It's a complete defeatist position.

NO ONE KNOWS how the Senate will vote. NO ONE can predict the future.

Hold the investigations/impeachment and see what happens. Doing nothing is 100% guaranteed to keeping these sociopaths in power.

33. He shouldn't, no.
That would be stupid of him. If he thinks he does not have a good case, he should not indict. He might be able to present what evidence he has to the defendant and attempt to negotiate a plea bargain, but that would be as far as any sane DA would go. If a DA looks at the evidence and says, "no jury would convict on this," then I would hope he would drop the case rather than waste the court's time.
