The most beautiful headline in the world: Dems prepare slew of oversight hearings
WASHINGTON - In this new era of divided government, the congressional hearing room is where the executive and legislative branches will clash.

Over the next few weeks, Senate Democrats plan to hold at least 11 hearings just on
Iraq. In the House, one of the Democrats' most dogged investigators is waiting to spring his committee on a different mission — suspected government fraud.

From the war to environmental policy and secret surveillance, the Democrats who now control both the House and Senate are armed with subpoena power and ready to summon panels of witnesses.

These newly empowered Democrats plan to put the Bush administration under scrutiny like never before.

6. I've contacted Conyers about her before and I intend to contact Waxman and Leahy.

I hope she gets to testify. I also hope she gets one of the courts to hear her case. She tried taking it to the Supreme Court but they rejected her. I have a feeling these hearings are going to make the Watergate and Iran-Contra hearings look like kindergarten stuff. There needs to be a Special Select Investigative Committee, House-Senate joint inquiries, hearings in the Judiciary, Intelligence, Foreign Relations, Government Reform and Armed Services Committees and Subcommittees broadcast on television 24/7 (like Watergate), a renewal of the Independent Counsel law and the appointment of an Independent Prosecutor (like Archibald Cox), an independent bipartisan NSA commission, a special citizens grand jury to investigate torture allegations, a new independent 9/11 investigation and a 9/11 investigation in New York by Eliot Spitzer's Attorney General and the Manhattan District Attorney.

7. I really want to see Biden sink his teeth into this thing.
He can be fairweather many times, but when he's on, he knows the right questions to ask.

Leahy is more of the methodical type. I'm looking forward to see what he does from a judicial oversight perspective.

And Waxman... man. Any hearings in which he participates will be must-see teevee for me.

I look forward to seeing more aggressive questioning now that the Dems are in control of Congress. And I hope they set aside any fears or doubts about using the power of the subpoena, even if they get stonewalled to the point it has to go to the Supreme Court.

10. Will witnesses be sworn in and interrogated or treated like talk show guests?
Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 11:57 PM by TahitiNut
Time will tell, I suppose. I'd like to see committee counsel ask the questions. Politicians do too much posturing and preening. (Think Biden.)
