Pictures from Impeach on the Beach while we wait (dial up warning)
for the money shot. :)

CodePink setting up the Pete's coffee they brought for us while the Letter Capts mark off and organize their spots.

There were many kids there! I heard one five yr old say, "These people don't like Bush! Let's go here!"

Another one of the CodePink outfit. :)

There were a goodly number of Beach Dogs for Impeachment, too.

And this was my Letter H band of protesters

Who are the people in your neighborhood. :loveya:

My favorite - ladies who were to the lefter side of "H" with me.

I can't wait to see what this looked like from above. We had a good sized crowd although you can't tell from these pix.

:hi:

Code Pink, parties that shall remain nameless, 9/11 Truth folks -- liberals spanning at least three generations. It felt like a family reunion only huge.

I couldn't take pictures of the whole crowd because we were under strict instructions to be flat and not cast shadows across letter lines.

The main organizer had tried to get this together two other times, but it took this long to put together. He was excellent, patient and running around giving instructions while talking to the copter guys.

Brad, you did good. :yourock:

11. Last weekend it was raining, 'member?
We weren't cold at all until the last 30 minutes or so.

But, for all people say libs bicker over trifles, this bunch just laughed everything off and while we were lying there, traded protest stories.

I can't WAIT to see! The copter did maybe five passes and we did things like wave, go to the seawall and back into position, walk to the surf. It was sort of like one of those DeMille deals.

14. THANKS, SFEXPAT2000! You know what? I LOVE PEOPLE!
I don't know why this is just sort of occurring to me. But I do. And I especially love my fellow and sister Americans when we get mad, and we get organized, and we take action! It is so beautiful to behold!

Looks like it was pretty cold out there!

Can't wait to see the overhead!

Faux News put a title on Pelosi taking the gavel that said, "100 hours of turning America into San Franciso" (or something like that), that I'm sure they thought it was a cute winger snipe, but what they don't seem to realize is that that's what everybody wants. 70% of the American people want the Iraq War ended! And about 70% are good and pissed off about EVERYTHING the Bushites have done. And guess where the hotbed of antiwar activity, and anti-Bush activity, has always been? San Francisco!

My hats off to you, San Francisco! You've done it again!

23. More pix from an "M"!
Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 05:59 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
I was down at the other end of the beach from you, with the "M" -- we had the largest letter contingency. You should have seen us trying to do a letter "wave" -- it wasn't pretty. :P

When were arrived, they had already set up the letters by scraping their outline in the sand. We were given handouts with instructions on how to fill in the letters and what actions they may have us do (lay down, stand up and wave, walk to the beach wall). They had large signs in the sand at the head of each letter for us to use as a guide. I settled myself at the eastern edge of the "M" with a very nice group of people and a very cool dog named Bode.

I was happy with the coverage we were getting -- both local ABC and NBC were there, along with dozens of other indie media outlets. This is an ABC channel 7 reporter interviewing one of the "Ps".

This is the local ABC helicopter buzzing by us.

This is Brad, the guy who originated and coordinated the event - he was all over the place with his red bullhorn. He jumped into the "M" right behind my head after the first helicopter images were taken -- he got word from the chopper that what they were getting looked great. That was so good to hear.

The event was full of colorful characters of course -- this is San Francisco! This gal had a "Too bad Bush Sr. didn't pull out!" t-short on.

And here was the V for Vendetta group that hung out down at my end.

Here is the guy every San Francisco knows -- Frank "12 Galaxies" Chu, a many with a sign and his own wiki entry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Chu

And what would a San Francisco anti-war event be without a naked person??? At least he wasn't the old coot with the gigantically enlarged scrotoum who I've seen at rallies before. He gives me the willies. :scared:

The two choppers that were hired did many fly-bys trying to get the best still and video images they could. We worked for those images -- standing, waving, walking -- not to mention the sand in uncomfortable places. It was all over in around an hour, and most folks headed to warmer locales.

All in all it was a very good event -- the day was perfection weatherwise, and the crowd was in good spirits. I heard many talk about how they wish this was a weekly event. My only disappontment was the lack of under 30 people -- there were some, but it was an overwhelmingly older crowd. Even here in San Francisco, the connection isn't made for them. :( The images and film are supposed to be available after 2:00pm pacific time at http://www.beachimpeach.org

Glad to hear another DUer was representing! :hi: Hope you had as much fun down at your end of the beach!

Bu then again, maybe he says that to ALL the letters! :D

You know what I loved seeing? All the seniors out there -- I mean the WWII generation, all bundled up against the cold, walking through the sand with their canes. I find them so fucking inspiring -- I want to be one those kind of people when I get old. When we did the walk to the seawall, there was a very old Russian couple who here holding onto each other for dear life as they tried to make their way through the sand - I just wanted to hug the shit out of them for being there and still caring.

Yup, I wanna be 90 years old and chaining myself to the White House gates should we suffer some future Bushesque nightmare.

132. You Are Blatantly Mistaken.
I never had a problem getting it to begin with, nor will you find any statement of mine to show otherwise.

My comment in your thread of which you and others needlessly berated me for was in reference to your over the top comment that because of the above protest that "the nation and world will have convincing evidence of how badly the American people (even Ms. Pelosi’s own constituency) want their leaders held accountable for the Iraq disaster;".

That is still a grossly exaggerated and inaccurate claim and my opinion of it still holds firm.

As far as the picture itself was concerned, my original comments were "Definitely sounds like it'll be a good picture though", so it is clear I never had a problem with the concept and fully understood that it would be a cool picture. To twist my approval of that picture now that it is tangible, into being an about face from my original position, is simply intellectually incorrect, misguided and plain wrong. I always looked forward to seeing the picture. My complaint was with a grossly exaggerated and silly declaration that was stated as fact rather than over-dramatized commentary.

A little accuracy goes a long way Omega. I'd appreciate it if you don't twist my words, intentions or opinions in the future merely for provocation, inaccurate criticism and some false gotcha that didn't exist.

Thanks. :hi:

134. The phrase that you obsessed over
was an affirmative statement from the original notice emailed by promoters of Impeach on the Beach.

"News editors will have compelling photos for the next morning’s Sunday papers; the nation and world will have convincing evidence of how badly the American people (even Ms. Pelosi’s own constituency) want their leaders held accountable for the Iraq disaster; and the impeachment movement will have powerful visuals to go with the words and chatter swirling in the air for months and months now."

The numerous threads-- 2 of which are on the DU Homepage-- and photos/articles in various national media prove the results.

We would appreciate if you would be not piss on other DUers parades, before they even start.

79. Have you checked out the high res versions?
I can see the two folks in their chairs you were nearby. Managed to spot myself (finally!) after recognizing someone who was right above me.

I taped the channel 7 piece -- it was fairly long and had the ABC legal analyst talking about what Bush could be impeached over. I have channel 5 on right now with a tape going, but haven't seen a report yet. NBC has sports game on right now -- will check to see when news is on so I can tape it. Has anyone seen it hit anything national yet? (ABC national news didn't cover it.)

From all the press I've seen so far it looks like the exclaimation point was the happening place to be! :D

So, what is the hold up?

Pictures are worth a thousand words.

I read your concern about the young people and I believe they will start coming. I live by Claremont, CA. There is a retirement center, Pilgrim Place, whose residents have dedicated their lives to some form of church service. There are several members of my church who reside there and I am in so much awe of their wisdom. Some of the people I know marched with Dr. King, fought for Native American rights and have worked in countless peace agreements. Every Friday, they are out on the corner of Arrow and Indian Hill having a peace vigil. I wouldn't want to venture a guess on what their average age is. They stand, sit in chairs and wheelchairs and never miss a Friday. Now, the young people are joining. The elders are thrilled and the young are getting an unbelievable education. I have hope.

that when we work for peace and justice, in some sense we are subversive -- of a culture that seems obsessed by itself, that is isolating, that revels in unselfconscious consumerism. In a strange way, that subversiveness can be attractive to younger people. Maybe because it's necessarily energetic and at times, creative.

Let's see how we do. :)
