Is Monday a national holiday?
I thought I heard that Congress is cancelling sessions on Monday because of a football game. Is this true? It seems to contradict the new "higher standard", 5-day work week that was touted as the new work ethic.

The more things change ...

Me, I have to work Monday.

1. The game is at 8:00 PM EST
SO I'm sure they can cram a whole day's work in.

2. There is no such thing as a National Holiday in the US...
We have "Federal Holidays" where federal employees are given the day off.
I haven't heard anything about this Monday being designated such...but I'll take it!

5. I'm thinking of Jan 8, BCS day.
College football championship game. As mentioned above, it starts 5pm EST, but I think Congress is taking the day off for the game.

non-specific as it is ...

http://clerk.house.gov/floorsummary/floor.html

with the closing motion:

6:45 P.M. -
Ms. DeGette asked unanimous consent That when the House adjourns on Friday, January 5, 2007, it adjourn to meet at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, for Morning-Hour Debate. Agreed to without objection.

No mention of meeting on Monday the 8th.

(next time will attempt to find a good "cite" before post - mea culpa :( )

edit to add: the House recordings made no mention of the reason for skipping Monday. That is only my recollection of the radio story, that it is due to the football game.

14. No votes scheduled for Monday, January 8.
I expect there'll be 1-minute speeches and a quorum call followed by a suspension until Tuesday.

11. A football game was mentioned in the tallying of Pelosi's votes
Perhaps you are confusing MLK day with that. http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/01/05/pelosi/

Earlier, the House clerk had read off a traditional verbal roll call to determine Pelosi's election as speaker, a process that took more than an hour. Each vote was recorded with a different ceremonial pencil, emblazoned with the colors of the American flag. As they announced their votes, Democrats called Pelosi, 66, the "pride of San Francisco," "the young lady from California," and "the conscience of America." Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., a Democrat of Illinois, evoked the names of Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and Jesus before casting his vote for speaker. Others invoked "the children of Katrina and Darfur" and the "Ohio State Buckeyes," a football team set to play for the national championship on Monday. As expected, Pelosi won the job with 233 votes, one for every Democrat in the House.

12. I heard it too
And next Monday is out since the House, despite Democratic pledges of a disciplined five-day work schedule, will not be in session. The day off was scheduled to allow freshman lawmakers time to return from an orientation session — and others to attend the college football national championship game.

17. For those who are agreeing with the OP, I suggest you read the NYT article in it's entirety.
And next Monday is out since the House, despite Democratic pledges of a disciplined five-day work schedule, will not be in session. The day off was scheduled to allow freshman lawmakers time to return from an orientation session — and others to attend the college football national championship game.

At the same time, House Republicans, forced to the Congressional sidelines for the first time in 12 years, were growing increasingly agitated about the Democratic timetable. They said that the rush by Democrats to force through legislation on national security, the minimum wage, student loan costs and energy without a full slate of hearings — and with limits on the ability of Republicans to offer alternatives — undercut the pledges of Democrats to run things in a more transparent, collegial way than the Republicans had when they were in power.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/03/washington/03cong.html?_r=2&bl=&ei=5087%0A&en=4061c59d85544594&ex=1168146000&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1168117386-IACUlwSuuBQEeLIW1dW3Ow&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

So the Republicans are pissed that we are playing by the rules THEY made? :nopity:

Furthermore:

We elected them to make laws. For them to do so, they need to ALL be there. If a great deal of my fellow employees were to miss one day of work for training and I required their input, I'd put off any important business until they were available too.
