Is Nancy Boyda nuts?
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 10:51 PM by jgraz
This is NOT the kind of Democratic leadership I voted for. DUers in Boyda's district should make sure you let her know how you feel.

Is Nancy Boyda Nuts?

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/01/05/is-boyda-nuts

I saw this last night on ABC in a segment titled "Washington's Freshman Talk Iraq Policy" and my jaw dropped. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Gibson: Would you vote in favor of money to support another 20,000 to 40,000 troops in Iraq?

Boyda: I think we're going to vote to support what the commander in chief and head of military asks to do. At least, I am certainly going to vote to support it.

Gibson:: If he wants the surge, he'll get it.

Boyda: Yes.… He is the commander in chief, Charlie. We don't get that choice. Congress doesn't make that decision.

Gibson: But the polls would indicate, and indeed, so many voters when they came out of the ballot box, said, "We're voting because we want something done about the war and we want the troops home."

Boyda: They should have thought about that before they voted for President Bush not once, but twice.

Is she kidding me? Earth to Bodya, we just had another election and the American people realized they made a mistake and voted YOU in to make a change. You're supposed to be part of the solution now, not another Rubber Stamper. Wake up!

7. Do it.
Apparently she was innundated today with calls and email from all over the country. We nailed her from Kansas but every little bit helps. I thought we had time to breathe a little but I guess not. Time to do our thing, at least we have a Dem (?) to work on and her staff will at least talk to us, that is a pretty big change anyway. Do it, we could use the support.

12. We also need to remind her of what her JOB is
because Congress was never meant to be a rubber stamp for a tin pot dictator with dreams of empire.

10. I saw her last night and thought I was listening to a Republican
My favorite: "He is the commander in chief, Charlie. We don't get that choice. Congress doesn't make that decision."

CONGRESS is supposed to make decisions about war! Like declaring it for God's sake. Or withholding funding. Or impeaching a "decider" who is on the path to destroying the US. (As in, "Why does George W. Bush hate America so much that he is destroying its economy and its reputation overseas?")

Or maybe Boyda thinks it's her job to enable a "decider"?

13. What else would she do?
Bush is going to send the troops, there isn't really anything that can be done about that, so voting against funding wouldn't really stop that, it might cause bigger problems.

21. She's still sending the wrong message though.
Instead of:

I think we're going to vote to support what the commander in chief and head of military asks to do. At least, I am certainly going to vote to support it.

how about something more like:

If Bush wants to abuse his powers and exacerbate this train wreck by sending more young men and women into that mess, then Congress's hands are tied. We're not going to hang our brave troops out to dry by cutting off their funding.

Just because one acknowledges the situation you describe in your post doesn't mean one has to make it sound like an endorsement of Bush's agenda.

15. As a Kansan, I stand with Nancy
As I posted in the Kansas forum:

Look at the question that Gibson asked. He asked her if she would vote to support the troops. She said yes and then pointed out that Bush, as commander-in-chief, deploys troops. Congress doesn't have that power. Instead, congress can vote to fund troops. So, if, as Gibson hypothesized, there were more troops in Iraq, Nancy would have been excoriated if she had said she would cut the funding to them.

fwiw, I have actively campaigned for Nancy since 2003. In 2004, her opponent Jim Ryun (R) ran commercials taunting Nancy's decision to go to D.C. and protest the Iraq War. He said she would be weak on terrorisms.

Nancy was an early opponent to the Iraq War and I believe her staff when they say, she does not support a surge but if the troops are sent there, she will vote to make sure they have what they need to survive and get home. She wants the troops home.
