Boyda, former Republican, now D?-KS on The McCain Doctrine
Gibson: Would you vote in favor of money to support another 20,000 to 40,000 troops in Iraq?

Boyda: I think we're going to vote to support what the commander in chief and head of military asks to do. At least, I am certainly going to vote to support it.

Gibson: If he wants the surge, he'll get it.

Boyda: Yes.… He is the commander in chief, Charlie. We don't get that choice. Congress doesn't make that decision.

Gibson: But the polls would indicate, and indeed, so many voters when they came out of the ballot box, said, "We're voting because we want something done about the war and we want the troops home."

Boyda: They should have thought about that before they voted for President Bush not once, but twice.

Saw this on CrooksAndLiars.com Can you believe that? Read the article here with video (gotta love C&L for the videos) and links.

1. We are ON it
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=153x6881

Some of us who worked on Boyda's campaign are more than a bit pissed off at her today. I for one will be watching her like a hawk. I still think she is better than Jim Ryun, who she replaced. But I heard her with my own two ears on the campaign trail saying she wanted to bring the troops home. She appears to have flip flopped.

Thanks for posting the link. I had not had a chance to see the video yet. Damn! Nancy gots some splaining to do.

2. Charles Gibson gave her every out he could....
but she stuck to her guns. Hey I'm from Oklahoma and know how it is out there in the heartland. It's really something how the Dems took so many offices in Kansas during the midterms. Keep their feet to the fire. Sometimes it's hard to break a bad habit like Republicanism.

4. I think it'll be ok.

I'm not sure what's what here but I believe she probably was just trying to say something and didn't do it so eloquently where as if she had she'd be ok in everyones book. I think more or less it was just a blunder from having your first real national interview. It is true what she said. Bush has the final say in this matter, not Congress, he is the Commander in Chief. Regardless I will support her re-election, and regardless I will bust ass for her in 2008 working on her campaign.

7. What she says has a ring of truth...
Bush has the sole authority (and partial funding) for a short-term troop escalation. What bothered me was her tone of voice and her conviction in saying that she'd support him no matter what. As Gibson pointed out the majority of Americans favor troop withdrawal and not escalation although it may not be that way with a majority of Kansans.

One would hope that she'd be willing to question the sanity of a troop escalation right now IMHO.

14. She has had plenty of national interviews
and Congress has a lot more power than Nancy realizes.

She needs to do her homework and stop sounding like a republic war monger.

3. I believe we flooded her
with email, faxes and phone calls today. She had better stand fast to what she told us when she was running. If she turns she will not have our support again, we will find someone else to replace her.

Mabus gave us the best explanation that she was given when she called, it is at the link that proud posted in response #1. We will be watching her and contacting her until she knows just who she is representing.

5. We can't toss her out via the primary.

There's no one that would be able to chase her out and doing so could condemn this district to a Republican again. She's our best bet in 2008 and for all practicallity will be our nominee. Just hold her feet to the fire till she explains this and actually makes sense out of it.

6. There is no making sense of
staying with Bush on this war. I don't care who represents me as long as they stop the dying. I would rather have a Rep RWer than a Dem RWer. I know someone who would be anxious to enter the race, almost did this time. He could beat her with no problem if she turns. I spoke with him and he is getting ready in case, he was just in too late to really do it.

I plan on holding her feet to the fire but she will never be able to explain this away. I want her reasons and I want her to say that she is going to do what she promised. I represented a state board when I spoke with her about an issue we had with her when she ran the last time. If she turns on that too my cred is shot, I spent many hours talking to the committees and individuals reassuring them that she had changed her mind with the change away from Washington control of her campaign. I am worried, very worried.

8. I'm of the opinion,

That she just made a big bumble and miss-stated what she really meant. Let's make our decision once she's made it clear what her opinion is.

9. I will make my decision
when I decide. If she does not hold to the policy she stated when she ran she will not get my support again. That is all. She had better learn really quickly to talk to the media, this was outrageous and really really stupid.

Would you not vote for her though? That's be tantamount to a vote for a Repuke!

11. I am not
a Democrat and I am not really a team player. When someone does not do what they said they would they lose my vote. Why vote for a Dem in Repub clothing? Why work your ass off for someone who does not represent you?

I am waiting for her to respond. My decision will be made as things go along.

13. If she quacks like a duck...
Wouldn't it be better to get a real Democrat to run in two years, rather than having a false choice between bad and worse?

By the way, welcome to our world in the Kansas 3rd. Moore screws us over like this a lot.

I was worried about all of the KS Republicans switching over to the Democratic party, and we may be reaping a pretty nasty harvest from that.

16. Sounds like she is taking lessons from Moore
And it just makes me ill. I just watched the video of Boyda's interview and it made me even angrier. No way can you twist what she said into anything resembling her campaign promises.

Hey Neecy, we are having a Majority Party tomorrow at the Flea Market in Westport. Starts right after the Chiefs game - around 6:30. You should come join us!!

I'm going to a Chiefs party tomorrow - I was invited (I suspect) because I'm a Raiders fan and oh, there's so much material this year to taunt me with. If I get out of there in one piece I'll head over to Westport since I'll be fairly close by.

Wanna bet?
Some of us are already on the hunt for a true progressive to run in 2008. Nancy Boyda is not the only or the best bet in the 2nd district. If she continues to speak out FOR the war, she is toast.

Don't believe me? Ask Joe Lieberman what the netroots did to his campaign.

I agree with Muse. I would rather have Ryun back than a flip flopping DINO.

18. I am so freaking sick
and tired of being taken advantage of. Is it really to much for this state to handle an honest politician? A liberal? Damn, I really hoped. I am waiting before I jump ship but after watching the video I am really steamed, more so than when I called them.

23. Yikes!
She actually said that?? I believe you but I am not happy to hear that. I suppose part of that was to ensure her election and there was a lot of "bad stuff" about her joining the protests and organizing bus trips to Washington for the protests.

I was worried that it was too good to be true. I am still holding out until I hear from her. I am certain a form letter is on it's way as I write this. If I hear an explanation that is not to my liking I will send a letter asking her about the other things she promised. Specifically about the GLBT issues. I personally got assurances from her that she would not vote against the GLBT community and this worries me a lot.

24. Yes she did
and at the time I felt bad but thought that as a candidate in a red state, she needed to keep her distance from the far left anti-war protesters. So I put it out of my mind.

Then I called my friend David earlier this evening because he doesn't have a computer and I figured he hadn't heard all this about Boyda yet. He was with me that day in Topeka and as I was talking to him I remembered this little conversation with Nancy.

kiteinthewind was there too. I will ask her if she remembers this.

Nancy's comments that day in Topeka sure take on a whole different meaning now, don't they?

I was also thinking about you all day today and the gay marriage crap that lost Nancy the election in 2004.

The Camp Casey group is LIVID with Boyda now. I have gotten to the point today where I am afraid to check my email. LOL

25. Damn.
I believe you it is just hard to believe at all.

God, I just really worked hard to get them to trust her again, quite a few people told me they would never trust her again. Now I can see why. How could we have misjudged her so much? I certainly hope this is all over reaction to something that was just a mistake, a BIG one. She assured me that she would never vote against them, perhaps she won't but it sure as hell worries me.

I'll bet they are livid. Maybe it is a good thing that I am on this lousy dinosaur of a computer, I can't get my email. I can barely maintain online presence, it keeps shutting me off. I think it is sheer anger keeping it on today, lol. AI knows I would gladly throw it against the wall today.
