Democrats play Dead to thank their big heroes

It might just have saved the Republicans from defeat in November’s mid-term elections: Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, the new Democrat leaders in the House of Representatives and Senate, both admitted yesterday that they are “Deadheads”.

At a lavish party on Thursday night to celebrate the Democrats’ ascension to power on Capitol Hill for the first time in 12 years, the surviving members of the Grateful Dead topped the bill as guests of two of their greatest fans: Ms Pelosi, the new House Speaker, and Mr Reid, the new Senate Majority Leader.

“Ms Pelosi is a huge Dead fan,” her spokesman said — probably because the psychedelia-influenced rock band was formed in 1965 in her home city of San Francisco. Mr Reid, meanwhile, has what he calls his “prized possession” hanging on a bathroom wall at his Ne-vada home: a signed poster of the Grateful Dead.

At the $1,000-a-head party, where guests ate goat cheese ra-violi with pumpkin and truffle, the surviving members of the Dead headlined a series of acts that included Tony Bennett, Carole King and Wyclef Jean. http://www.timesonline.co.uk:80/article/0,,11069-2533198,00.html
