BUSH: Is experience really necessary? It’s only HOMELAND SECURITY
With the start of a new year, take some time to look back. Today's 'On this date in Bush history...'

"Those who enter the country illegally violate the law" President Bush, November 28th 2005

The Washington Post reports on this date in 2006 that President Bush has taken advantage of a Congressional break to make several ‘recess appointments’, thus avoiding the need to get immediate Congressional approval. Amongst these is Julie Myers, named to head the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau at the Department of Homeland Security. The president’s suggestion that Ms. Myers head the post was controversial because, while it would make sense to have someone with experience in immigration issues performing this work, Ms. Myers does not have that experience. Still, she does have a couple of things going for her. You see, she is the niece of former Joint Chiefs of Staff chair Richard B. Myers, and her husband is the chief of staff to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. With political connections like those one could see why it might not be too difficult to get a big job in President Bush’s Department of Homeland Security. After all, is experience really necessary? It’s only Homeland Security.

President Bush says on this date in 2005 "I believe we are called to do the hard work to make our communities and quality of life a better place." So ask yourself, is your quality of life a better place?
