Frankenstein was written in 1817 by Mary Shelly and the main point is that Dr. Frankenstein was irresponsible and failed to take care of the creature that he created. Had he done this, his creature would have been fine. Doesn´t this remind you of Iraq? Had bu$h done things right in Iraq, everything would be fine instead of falling apart.

Not all people are Frankenstein or bu$h bad and they´ve given us the thousands of body part transplant methods that no one thinks of as unethical.

You got it somewhere above: the immediate goal of such research would be animals that would produce human-compatible biologicals: bacteria that secrete insulin, pigs that could produce blood or organs a human could use without rejection problems, etc., so that everything doesn't hinge on the small supply of donations.

Of course, there are ethical issues involved (exactly what sorts of alterations amount to "going too far", etc.) as well as practical ones (such hybridization would potentially make it easier for animal diseases to mutate to accept a human host, thus providing a better means for those diseases to "jump" to humans), but that's something to be addressed and hashed out thought public and professional debate.

I've been likening the sort of blanket ban * has called for to blocking all computer research in 1950 out of the fear of creating Terminator robots or Cylons.
