So for the World Championships being held in Germany, many Dutch soccer fans will be wearing orange Nazi-style helmets with a flag and slogan on the side as seen here:

http://www.helmpje.nl/

Apparently they are doing this specifically as a jab at the German hosts of the event. Given the tumultuous history there, I am finding this to actually be really funny...although something in the back of my head is telling me I should be offended.

So what does DU think?

1. The world championship is being held in Detroit, not Germany
If you're not supposed to use your God-given opposable thumb to grab the ball, it's not a sport. Just a bunch of swan-divin', shin-grabbin' mamas boys, if you ask me.

3. Touché...
...but notice I said "soccer" and not "football."

I happen to agree with you 100%.

4. LOL
The American championship is in Detroit. "World championship." Although, Cowher and Holmgren both wish their players had the conditioning it takes to be a soccer player. Then they wouldn't need oxygen after one kick-off return. :eyes:

8. No DOUBT that soccer players are more conditioned...
...they have to run around aimlessly for HOURS at a time, not touching a ball, and scoring once every 8 hours or so. ;) Must be INCREDIBLY exhausting, for sure... just not too fun to watch (for me personally).

10. Can't argue with you there
About it just not being all that much fun to watch every game. The highlights are special, though, which is why I like to catch game summaries rather than watching entire broadcasts.

I say this as one who loves to watch American football more than any other sport, so it's all in good fun.

18. Allow a limey to educate all you philistine colonials.

Football is a sport played with a "ball" (a spherical object), which is controlled by the use of the "foot" (the thing on the end of the leg, as opposed to the "hand", which is to be found on the arm).

The game you are refering to, a bastardised version of rugby, should properly be known as hand-ellipsoid, and as a sport is not a patch on football, a game where the play actually flows, rather than stopping every five minutes (not that I'm prejudiced, or anything...).

:-)

5. Hitler is dead, most of his army was punished
The people of todays Germany would most likely put that period of history behind them, much in the same way as we will want the bu$h era behind us.
Poor Taste.

6. I agree.
I probably wouldn't call it "offensive," but definitely in poor taste.

11. Does it matter that the Dutch are the ones doing it?
Considering their valiant resistance to the Nazis in WWII?

For some reasons the Islamic meltdown over those 12 cartoons is really annoying me this morning.

16. The Dutch really, really still loathe the Germans...
at least in Arnhem, site of Operation Marketgarten. I met family there a few years ago and although they were PC in the extreme about everything else, they STILL have a bee in their bonnet about Germany.

I suspect it has to do with Holland's youth's deep respect for their elders--many of whom survived WW2 with vivid memories.

Give it another generation.
