The most revolting fucking thing I've EVER heard a rightwinger say:
Edited on Thu Jan-04-07 10:51 PM by Redstone
I got into it about this stupid fucking war with a a rush-parroting rightwing asshole at the bar the other day, and I'm not sure if this came from mister limpball's radio show, but he said something that I would have decked him for saying, but Mrs R wouldn't let me.

I couldn't make this up if I tried: I said something about the other things we could have done with the half a trillion bucks we've pissed away on bushy's little war, and he actually said: "Where do you think that half a trillion dollars has gone? It's gone right into the U.S. economy!"

Mrs R wouldn't let me hit him, so I asked "So what you're telling me is that it's OK for us to kill three thousand of our children, to keep the economy strong?

Amazingly enough, he actually responded with that bullshit about "what's three thousand dead; that's not as many people dead as there are from car accidents...."

I told Mrs R, and loudly, that if she really didn't want me to hit him, we had to leave, so we left. For once, I wish Mrs R hadn't been with me. I would have really enjoyed mopping the floor with that soulless piece of shit. Would have been easy, too; the guy even looked like Limpballs - an old, fat, pasty drunken lazy bastard with a BIG, fat mouth, but small brains. Probably tiny dick, too.

"It doesn't matter if Americans are dying in Iraq, as long as it helps the economy!" Fuck me, that's the WORST I've heard yet.

Thank you all for allowing me to vent. I can't talk to Mrs R about it because if I do, I'll get (another) lecture about how I can't pound any sense into anyone, and an asshole isn't worth getting arrested over. Yes, I know, she's probably right. But I would have enjoyed it.

Redstone, if I were your wife, I would give you:

"...(another) lecture about how I can't pound any sense into anyone, and an asshole isn't worth getting arrested over."

Glad you didn't get hurt. Sometimes, testosterone just overrules mens' brains, and I include my hubby in that, too.

Regards to your wife. She has your best interests at heart.

In peace,

then i am sure there is more to the story, for you.

this is the really sick part of the whole thing. the right spouting off standing for the soldiers when what they support is absolute opposite of standing with soldiers and they will be the first to say, but they volunteered. has to make vets, especially vets against the war, so mad. assuming this is what you were implying, that you are a vet. (i always lose when i assume). i have massive respect and admiration for the vets on this board.

And no, I was never in an armed service, but I did work for the Air force under contract, and I did end up in combat in Southeast Asia and was wounded in the process. A long and twisted story of stupidity on my part. But hey, $1500 per month was a lot of money in 1972.

I would have also said that he is invited to go explain to each of the 3000 sets of parents that their children deaths are simply part of doing business and that they could have just as easily died in a car accident. If if parts of him return from that mission to explain his views to the relatives of our dead soldiers, then you would be happy to continue the conversation.

32. Far from the most revolting I've heard...
That came at the start of Gulf War I, from a truly f***ed-up programmer who was a co-worker. He said he was hoping that genetic research could progress to the point where we could identify a gene only found in those of Arab background. Then, we could create an AIDS-like virus that would only affect people with that gene, and release it into the atmosphere, so that it could kill off every Arab in the world while leaving "normal people" alone. :puke:

Then, to prove he was an equal-opportunity bigot, he went on to say that, once Arabs were eliminated from the face of the earth, the next thing the U.S. should do would be to "invade Israel," no doubt to carry out a Finaler-Than-Final Solution.

Need I mention he was also addicted to crystal meth?

The very idea is ludicrous; it's akin to saying that buying and wasting a good or service is preferable to buying and productively using a good or service.

If the money weren't spent on the war, it would be spent elsewhere. It isn't like half a trillion dollars worth of goods just popped out of nowhere when Bush decided to smash Iraq.

As you say, though, even if it did, it wouldn't be worth it. Human lives cannot justly be sacrificed for wealth.

58. What is so weird about that...
is on the one hand they act as though 3000 dying in a war is nothing out of the ordinary; on the other hand they act as though 3000 dying as a result of terrorism is reason to abolish civil liberties and of course have that war. They can't have it both ways - exploiting deaths when it suits them, and trivializing deaths when it suits them. Of course, to do either is callous, but to do both is callous AND either insane or hypocritical or most likely both.

I've heard that (or similar) several times, too.

Of course, if you compare our 140,000 troops in Iraq to the 40 million people in California, California does come up a bit short. Of course, they conveniently forget that there are another 27 million Iraqis dying at way too fast a rate.

51. A Suggestion
The visceral response that tempts us to be violent is understandable and normal. Keeping it in check is appropriate and beneficial. Consider, in your efforts to contribute to peace, if you could see encounters like this as an opportunity. You can even tell yourself that you're going to have fun "fucking with the head" of the other person (snicker fiendishly afterward for bonus points).

My suggestion is not to tell things that you know, but instead to ask questions and find out what "wrong facts" the person may believe. When this can be determined, it can often be shown as contradictory to something else they tell you they believe. Exit stage left. Leave them to sort out how they can believe the two conflicting points. All the while they're happy to talk if you seem interested, or better, like you're learning from what they have to say. Theirs is a proud ignorance, you know. Anyway, this is a strategy for getting people to confront their cognitive dissonance. It is part of what I call ruthless honesty. In my opinion, this is the best way for us to win back many of those souls that have detached from reality.

Why not skip the middleman -and the 3,000 troops killed- and hand the cash out (by my estimation, around a thousand bucks for each of us) in little wicker baskets to every American citizen?

Tell the guy to help the economy. Tell him he needs to his patriotic duty, join up and go to Iraq.

56. That was the first thing I heard a supporter say about the War on Terror.
And it was my (now ex) boyfriend's mother who said it. I think she was drunk at the time, but still. This was on September 11, 2001. The ex and his fam and I had all decided to keep our dinner date with each other despite the crisis. What a mistake. The very first opinion Mrs. Asshole expressed about the putative U.S. military response to 9/11 was "Well, it's like I was just telling Mr. Asshole--war stimulates the economy!" You have never seen a happier face in your life, either. UGH. How happy I am to be free of the influence of these people.

Good for you for not hitting anyone, Redstone.

That kind of family is just WAY too much of a burden to have to bear.

57. That's the worst thing you've heard a rightwinger say? You're lucky...
When the tsunami happened in Indonesia, a guy I know said (I shit you not), "Oh, flooding in Indonesia? Good, I hope it killed a lot of poor people."

A lot of these folks really don't have any empathy or conscience. We're just going to have to accept that.

59. WHAATTTTTT??? How horrible!!!
The worst thing that I've heard a right-winger say was: "Hitler made a mistake in invading other countries. He should have just stuck to his work at home, dealing with the communists and the gypsies" (the only reason he didn't add "and the Jews" was that there were a few of us present).

60. That'as bad and I've heard it before
from the same former neighbor who told me that veterans with auto tags like "POW", "Disabled American Veteran", anything that indicates they are vets who went through hell, are only doing it for sympathy.

61. RS - don't ever get into political debates where there is alcohol.
It could cost you your life! Seriously, awhile ago, here in Florida, a customer got into a political argument with the bartender and the bartender shot him dead!

Needless to say, the bartender was RW.

66. That "car accident" (or "drug murders/overdoses") "comparison" is THE RW
talking-point this year. Rush, Hannity, some Roger in for Rush, etc.

Also~~~How it's not really bad in Iraq, violence-wise, "COMPARED TO American cities".

IOW, just NOT ENOUGH DEAD in IRAQ for it to, you know, be NOTE-WORTHY.

Republicans are disgustingly, criminally evil. I'm sure they will say that spouting this "the number isn't so big" crap is "supporting the troops".

70. To top it off - the $500 billion has NOT all gone into the economy
Yes, some of it has - but, we import 60% or so of our oil, so 60% of all the fuel used there goes to economies in Saudi Arabia and other foreign countries...

And, how many billions has been pissed away trying to rebuild Iraq? That hasn't gone into the economy.

79. Bar fights with pasty, drunken lazy bastards with big fat mouths
usually isn't a good move. Those guys have mean lawyers. As an ex-bartender I have seen such things happen and I honestly believe those guys probably are loudmouths because they figure if anyone assaults them that they can sue them.

In my bar we usually made fun of them. Just keep baiting them and keep making them talk until you hit a point you can make fun of them and laugh at them. It really makes them mad and they can't do anything about it when you make them look like fools. You don't have to touch them. I have seen many of those conservative, three-piece suit guys leave with red faces never to return again.
