Patrick to take oath on Amistad bible

BOSTON -- On a bright and mild January day, Democrat Deval Patrick was sworn in as the 71st governor of Massachusetts Thursday, becoming the first Democratic to occupy the corner office in 16 years and the first African-American ever to do so.

In an outdoor ceremony on the steps of the Statehouse just after noon, Patrick, 50, swore his oath of office on the Amistad bible given to John Quincy Adams by kidnapped Africans whom Adams helped free in the Amistad slave ship case.

A very classy touch ... symbolic, historic, and inspiring. Why can't repugs do this kind of stuff, instead of the überpatriot, chest-thumping grandstanding that most modern humans just don't buy anymore?
