1. We should include the man who started them on their paths. . .

His protest, after all, was against an illegal war of US aggression.

5. Only works in times & places where there is
some semblance of a social conscience.

Cvil protests & getting yourself arrested never did much in the old Soviet Union or Nazi Germany. & Mandela spent--what--30 years behind bars?

12. I wonder how many people hated them?
It is very disconcerting to encounter someone who is telling the truth when everyone else is not.

Lucy Burns and others going to jail and their hunger strikes...

18. It isn't nice--------
--------to block the doorway,
It isn't nice to go to jail,
There are nicer ways to do it,
But the nice ways always fail.
It isn't nice, it isn't nice,
You told us once, you told us twice,
But if that is Freedom's price,
We don't mind.

It isn't nice to carry banners
Or to sit in on the floor,
Or to shout our cry of Freedom
At the hotel and the store.
It isn't nice, it isn't nice,
You told us once, you told us twice,
But if that is Freedom's price,
We don't mind.

We have tried negotiations
And the three-man picket line,
Mr. Charlie didn't see us
And he might as well be blind.
Now our new ways aren't nice
When we deal with men of ice,
But if that is Freedom's price,
We don't mind.

How about those years of lynchings
And the shot in Evers' back?
Did you say it wasn't proper,
Did you stand upon the track?
You were quiet just like mice,
Now you say we aren't nice,
And if that is Freedom's price,
We don't mind.

It isn't nice to block the doorway,
It isn't nice to go to jail,
There are nicer ways to do it
But the nice ways always fail.
It isn't nice, it isn't nice,
But thank you buddy for your advice,
But if that is Freedom's price,
We don't mind.

19. The actions of these men, though heroic, was dependent on one thing
The media. How the world came to know about them was through the media. If the media decides to cast them as heroes that is how the world comes to know them. If the media decides to villify Cindy that is how the world will come to know her.

Its about communication. It does not matter what you do. What matters is what is communicated to the people. The media is not the only means of communication but it is by far the most effective and far reaching. If the media decides you are the bad guy then that is a tremendous burden to overcome.
