If you were staging your own anti-war concert, who would you invite?
Here's something to take our minds off the anti-Sheehan attacks. Who would you invite as musical guests at your all-star antiwar concert? You can have multiple stages and spread it out over several days, so don't hold back. Here's mine, in no particular order:

STAGE ONE
Beastie Boys
Audioslave
Green Day
Project86 (lesser known quasi-Christian group, but very anti-BushCo - one of my personal faves)
Papa Roach
Incubus
Rancid
Smashing Pumpkins

STAGE TWO
Pearl Jam
REM
NOFX
Black Eyed Peas
P. Diddy
Missy Elliott
Snoop Dogg
Eminem and Dr. Dre
Public Enemy

STAGE THREE
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Bonnie Raitt
Melissa Etheridge
Sheryl Crow
Dave Matthews Band
Dixie Chicks
James Taylor

Special speakers: Cindy Sheehan (what would an anti-war rally be without her?), Al Sharpton, Wesley Clark, Howard Dean, Al Gore (hey, it's my fantasy rally, I can invite who I want to)

24. OMG-Yes!!..he could sing "Sam Stone"
Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.

Chorus:
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

Repeat Chorus:

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

Repeat Chorus

31. So here are the lyrics
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 09:58 PM by WahooJunkie
to self-evident

please read them. they are great. LONG, but well well worth it. even better to hear 'em.

yes,
us people are just poems
we're 90% metaphor
with a leanness of meaning
approaching hyper-distillation
and once upon a time
we were moonshine
rushing down the throat of a giraffe
yes, rushing down the long hallway
despite what the p.a. announcement says
yes, rushing down the long stairs
with the whiskey of eternity
fermented and distilled
to eighteen minutes
burning down our throats
down the hall
down the stairs
in a building so tall
that it will always be there
yes, it's part of a pair
there on the bow of noah's ark
the most prestigious couple
just kickin back parked
against a perfectly blue sky
on a morning beatific
in its indian summer breeze
on the day that america
fell to its knees
after strutting around for a century
without saying thank you
or please

and the shock was subsonic
and the smoke was deafening
between the setup and the punch line
cuz we were all on time for work that day
we all boarded that plane for to fly
and then while the fires were raging
we all climbed up on the windowsill
and then we all held hands
and jumped into the sky

and every borough looked up when it heard the first blast
and then every dumb action movie was summarily surpassed
and the exodus uptown by foot and motorcar
looked more like war than anything i've seen so far
so far
so far
so fierce and ingenious
a poetic specter so far gone
that every jackass newscaster was struck dumb and stumbling
over 'oh my god' and 'this is unbelievable' and on and on
and i'll tell you what, while we're at it
you can keep the pentagon
keep the propaganda
keep each and every tv
that's been trying to convince me
to participate
in some prep school punk's plan to perpetuate retribution
perpetuate retribution
even as the blue toxic smoke of our lesson in retribution
is still hanging in the air
and there's ash on our shoes
and there's ash in our hair
and there's a fine silt on every mantle
from hell's kitchen to brooklyn
and the streets are full of stories
sudden twists and near misses
and soon every open bar is crammed to the rafters
with tales of narrowly averted disasters
and the whiskey is flowin
like never before
as all over the country
folks just shake their heads
and pour

so here's a toast to all the folks who live in palestine
afghanistan
iraq

el salvador

here's a toast to the folks living on the pine ridge reservation
under the stone cold gaze of mt. rushmore

here's a toast to all those nurses and doctors
who daily provide women with a choice
who stand down a threat the size of oklahoma city
just to listen to a young woman's voice

here's a toast to all the folks on death row right now
awaiting the executioner's guillotine
who are shackled there with dread and can only escape into their heads
to find peace in the form of a dream

cuz take away our playstations
and we are a third world nation
under the thumb of some blue blood royal son
who stole the oval office and that phony election
i mean
it don't take a weatherman
to look around and see the weather
jeb said he'd deliver florida, folks
and boy did he ever

and we hold these truths to be self evident:
#1 george w. bush is not president
#2 america is not a true democracy
#3 the media is not fooling me
cuz i am a poem heeding hyper-distillation
i've got no room for a lie so verbose
i'm looking out over my whole human family
and i'm raising my glass in a toast

here's to our last drink of fossil fuels
let us vow to get off of this sauce
shoo away the swarms of commuter planes
and find that train ticket we lost
cuz once upon a time the line followed the river
and peeked into all the backyards
and the laundry was waving
the graffiti was teasing us
from brick walls and bridges
we were rolling over ridges
through valleys
under stars
i dream of touring like duke ellington
in my own railroad car
i dream of waiting on the tall blonde wooden benches
in a grand station aglow with grace
and then standing out on the platform
and feeling the air on my face

give back the night its distant whistle
give the darkness back its soul
give the big oil companies the finger finally
and relearn how to rock-n-roll
yes, the lessons are all around us and a change is waiting there
so it's time to pick through the rubble, clean the streets
and clear the air
get our government to pull its big dick out of the sand
of someone else's desert
put it back in its pants
and quit the hypocritical chants of
freedom forever

cuz when one lone phone rang
in two thousand and one
at ten after nine
on nine one one
which is the number we all called
when that lone phone rang right off the wall
right off our desk and down the long hall
down the long stairs
in a building so tall
that the whole world turned
just to watch it fall

and while we're at it
remember the first time around?
the bomb?
the ryder truck?
the parking garage?
the princess that didn't even feel the pea?
remember joking around in our apartment on avenue D?

can you imagine how many paper coffee cups would have to change their design
following a fantastical reversal of the new york skyline?!

it was a joke, of course
it was a joke
at the time
and that was just a few years ago
so let the record show
that the FBI was all over that case
that the plot was obvious and in everybody's face
and scoping that scene
religiously
the CIA
or is it KGB?
committing countless crimes against humanity
with this kind of eventuality
as its excuse
for abuse after expensive abuse
and it didn't have a clue
look, another window to see through
way up here
on the 104th floor
look
another key
another door
10% literal
90% metaphor
3000 some poems disguised as people
on an almost too perfect day
should be more than pawns
in some asshole's passion play
so now it's your job
and it's my job
to make it that way
to make sure they didn't die in vain
sshhhhhh....
baby listen
hear the train?

This has always been one of my faves, from Little Plastic Castles disc...

------

They were digging a new foudation in Manhattan
And they discovered a slave cemetary there
May their souls rest easy
Now that lynching is frowned upon
And we’ve moved on to the electric chair
And I wonder who’s gonna be president, tweedle dum or tweedle dummer?
And who’s gonna have the big blockbuster box office this summer?
Howabout we put up a wall between the houses and the highway
And you can go your way, and I can go my way

Except all the radios agree with all the tvs
And all the magazines agree with all the radios
And I keep hearing that same damn song everywhere I go
Maybe I should put a bucket over my head
And a marshmallow in each ear
And stumble around for
Another dumb numb week for another hum-drum hit song to appear

People used to make records
As in a record of an event
The event of people playing music in a room
Now everything is cross-marketing
Its about sunglasses and shoes
Or guns and drugs
You choose
We got it rehashed
We got it half-assed
We’re digging up all the graves
And we’re spitting on the past
And you can choose between the colors
Of the lipstick on the whores
Cause we know the difference between
The font of 20% more
And the font of teriakiyi
You tell me
How does it...make you feel?

You tell me
What’s ...real?
And they say that alcoholics are always alcoholics
Even when they’re as dry as my lips for years
Even when they’re stranded on a small desert island
With no place within 2,000 miles to buy beer
And I wonder
Is he different?
Is he different?
Has he changed? what’s he about? ...
Or is he just a liar with nothing to lie about?

Am I headed for the same brick wall
Is there anything I can do about
Anything at all?
Except go back to that corner in manhattan
And dig deeper, dig deeper this time
Down beneath the impossible pain of our history
Beneath unknown bones
Beneath the bedrock of the mystery
Beneath the sewage systems and the path drain
Beneath the cobblestones and the water mains
Beneath the traffic of friendships and street deals
Beneath the screeching of kamikaze cab wheels
Beneath everything I can think of to think about
Beneath it all, beneath all get out
Beneath the good and the kind and the stupid and the cruel
There’s a fire just waiting for fuel

There’s a fire just waiting for fuel
There’s a fire just waiting for fuel
There’s a fire just waiting for fuel

39. I'd want to invite Emmylou Harris on at least one stage.
She's a contributor to the global movement to remove mines so that little kids aren't blown to smithereens just for playing in the woods.

And she's a contirbutor to the Democratic Party as well.

And not least, she sings like an angel in a night rose garden.

75. Hi, tishaLA. Emmylou is a wonder. She is just a wonder.
A friend years ago, knowing that I then hated country & western, INSISTED I listen to this LP called PIECES OF THE SKY. I balked and whined and he INSISTED. So I said, "Ok, put the damn thing on and let's get this over with."

It knocked my socks off. I've never heard a voice like that ANYPLACE and it sent me soaring.

What a gift to insist that I listen to Emmylou Harris and what a present Emmylou Harris gives us all when she releases a recording. "From Boulder to Birmingham" is one of my favorite compositions of all time.

Sounds like you and I are Emmylou fans, and dammit, it's great to bump into you on DU.

All good wishes!

41. any musician should be offended by the snobbish remark Bush made today
Directed at larry gatlin(of the Gatlin Brothers)
"I grew up in Midland-Larry grew up in Midland-he was blue collar,I was white collar-he became a musician-I became president"
what a freaking moron

139. Fogerty is one of the best.
He's written another classic.

DEJA VU (ALL OVER AGAIN)

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you try to read the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again

Day by day I hear the voices rising
Started with a whisper like it did before
Day by day we count the dead and dying
Ship the bodies home while the networks all keep score

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Could your eyes believe the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again

One by one I see the old ghosts rising
Stumblin' 'cross Big Muddy
Where the light gets dim
Day after day another Momma's crying
She's lost her precious child
To a war that has no end

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you stop to read the writing at The Wall
Did that voice inside you say
I've seen this all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again
It's like Deja Vu all over again

57. All those who do the Dances of Universal Peace
around the world. We'd start Mir Mir o Mir, a Peace Dance done in the Kremlin before the fall of the Soviet Union, with words and title revised to "Salaam, Shalom". We'd invite everyone to join in the Dance, which has simple movements. The words are:

Spirit of Peace
To your cause we give our strength
That love may reign and war may cease
Salaam, Shalom

To find peace, one must be peace, and this Dance is a way to start.

Salaam, Shalom

"When The President Talks To God"

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

I saw them in Tampa recently and their coziness with Bush lately as well as the way Bono dedicated a song to the U.S. military turned me off. I seriously doubt he would have done the same thing in Paris or any other large city. He seemed to be catering to the crowd in a pathetic way. The applause he got for it was huge but I personally don't go for that stuff and I have been a fan since 1981.

"BOMB THE WORLD" (i recommend the "armageddon version" of this song)

I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE REASON WHY
YOU TELLIN' US ALL THAT WE NEED TO UNIFY
RALLY ROUND THE FLAG
AND BEAT THE DRUMS OF WAR
SING THE SAME OLD SONGS
YA KNOW WE HEARD 'EM ALL BEFORE
YOU TELLIN' ME IT'S UNPATRIOTIC
BUT I CALL IT WHAT I SEE IT
WHEN I SEE IT'S IDIOTIC
THE TEARS OF ONE MOTHER
ARE THE SAME AS ANY OTHER
DROP FOOD ON THE KIDS
WHILE YOU'RE MURDERIN' THEIR FATHERS
BUT DON'T BOTHER TO SHOW IT ON CNN
BROTHERS AND SISTERS DON'T BELIEVE THEM
IT'S NOT A WAR AGAINST EVIL
IT'S REALLY JUST REVENGE
ENGAGED ON THE POOREST BY THE SAME RICH MEN
FIGHT TERRORISTS WHEREVER THEY BE FOUND
BUT WHY YOU NOT BOMBING TIM MCVEIGH'S HOMETOWN
YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT PROPAGANDA TELEVISION
BUT ALL BOMBING IS TERRORISM

WE CAN CHASE DOWN ALL OUR ENEMIES
BRING THEM TO THEIR KNEES
WE CAN BOMB THE WORLD TO PIECES
BUT WE CAN'T BOMB IT INTO PEACE
WHOA WE MAY EVEN FIND A SOLUTION
TO HUNGER AND DISEASE
WE CAN BOMB THE WORLD TO PIECES
BUT WE CAN'T BOMB IT INTO PEACE

911
FIRE IN THE SKIES
MANY PEOPLE DIED
NO ONE EVEN REALLY KNOWS WHY
THEY TELLIN' LIES OF DIVISION AND FEAR
WE YELLED AND CRIED
NO ONE LISTENED FOR YEARS
BUT LIKE, "WHO PUT US HERE?"
AND WHO'S RESPONSIBLE?
WELL, THERE'S NO DEBATIN'
CAUSE IF THEY ASK ME I SAY
IT'S BIG CORPORATIONS
WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION
TRI-LATERAL ACTION
INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONS, SATAN
SEEMS LIKE IT'LL BE AN ENDLESS PRICE TAG
OF WARS TREMENDOUS
AND MOST DISTURBINGLY
THE DEATH TOLL IS SO HORRENDOUS
SO I SEND THIS TO THOSE
WHO SAY THEY DEFEND US
SEND US INTO HARM'S WAY
WE SHOULD ALL MAKE A REMEMBERENCE THAT
THIS IS BIGGER THAN TERRORISM
BLOOD IS BLOOD IS BLOOD AND UM
LOVE IS TRUE VISION
WHO WILL LISTEN?
HOW MANY SONGS IT TAKES FOR YOU TO SEE
YOU CAN BOMB THE WORLD TO PIECES
YOU CAN'T BOMB IT INTO PEACE

WE CAN CHASE DOWN ALL OUR ENEMIES
BRING THEM TO THEIR KNEES
WE CAN BOMB THE WORLD TO PIECES
BUT WE CAN'T BOMB IT INTO PEACE
WHOA WE MAY EVEN FIND A SOLUTION
TO HUNGER AND DISEASE
WE CAN BOMB THE WORLD TO PIECES
BUT WE CAN'T BOMB IT INTO PEACE

POWER TO THE PEACEFUL
AND I SAY, LOVE TO THE PEOPLE Y'ALL
POWER TO THE PEACEFUL
AND I SAY, LOVE TO THE PEOPLE Y'ALL

WE CAN CHASE DOWN ALL OUR ENEMIES
BRING THEM TO THEIR KNEES
WE CAN BOMB THE WORLD TO PIECES
BUT WE CAN'T BOMB IT INTO PEACE
WHOA WE MAY EVEN FIND A SOLUTION
TO HUNGER AND DISEASE
WE CAN BOMB THE WORLD TO PIECES

120. Dweezil Zappa as MC of the event!
If Frank were still alive, the concert would just be three nights of him!

But here's a few of the bands I would have:

Funkadelic
Tool (or A Perfect Circle)
The Foo Fighters
Flogging Molly
Depeche Mode
Iron Maiden
John Frusciante
The Mars Volta
Muse
Queens Of The Stone Age
Queensryche
The Rolling Stones (only on the condition that they played Sweet Neocon)

129. You'll hate me for saying it.. But U2
I know Bono is contested here because he's met with Bush.. but given his record of peace and outreach.. His songs he played at Clinton's library opening that preached against the war.. Right in front of chimpy who snarled the whole way through it.

He'd be on my list because I love Bono.. thought I'm sure i'll get flamed for saying it.

How could you forget him? The original anti-war, anti-fascist artist.

Don't hurt that he's Canadian, neither.
