Federal grant for Ohio earthquake monitor cut in half
THOMAS J. SHEERAN
Associated Press

CLEVELAND - The $27,000 annual federal grant to pay the coordinator of Ohio's earthquake monitoring was cut in half Wednesday and faces elimination next year, leaving the future of the 25-station quake sensing network in jeopardy.

Michael C. Hansen, part-time coordinator of the Ohio Seismic Network, told The Associated Press that he was informed last week by the U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes around the globe, that the agency was directing its resources to higher earthquake-risk states like California.

Ohio's monitoring network was launched in 1999 with a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency based on a USGS seismic risk map showing Ohio has one of the most active earthquake zones east of the Mississippi River.

Ohio's most recent big quake hit northeast Ohio 20 years ago, measuring 5.0 but causing no serious damage or injuries.

The cut in the grant means a $13,500 pay cut for Hansen, who plans to keep the coordinator's job for now.

2. Earthquakes are a serious threat in the Midwest
There are some major seismic zones in NW Ohio, NE and SW Indiana, and of course in Missouri, where there were earthquakes almost 200 years ago that changed the course of the Ohio River, and rang church bells in Boston.

But hey, prepare for disasters? Naaahhh. BushCo doesn't even respond to them when they've actually happened.

5. Yes. New Madrid.
There is also the Anna fault that goes from Dayton up to Ft. Wayne, IN. I believe this is the one the article is referring to that caused the 5.0 earthquake in the 60's (I think).

I just finished a project that was all about earthquake risk in Indiana. It was weird, because I got the job right after moving here from California. If it happens here, it is going to be much worse, for geological (resonance, amplification) reasons, and because of the nature of civilization in these parts (old, unreinforced brick structures everywhere).

If you live in these parts, it's a good idea to think about this when you're loading those top shelves . . .

9. I felt the quake you're talking about here in WV.
Bush needed the money to pay off a political crony like Brownie, or some other "NOBLE CAUSE!"
