Question: Did I hear wrong about Saddam's execution & Bush being in bed
Edited on Sat Dec-30-06 11:44 AM by mtnsnake
sound asleep at the time of the execution? Last night my wife and I were watching MSNBC around 10:30 EST, and they said Saddam had been executed at around 10 PM EST (or 9 PM in Crawford). They said reporters tried to contact Bush at his ranch in Crawford for an official response from him on Saddam's death but that Bush was already sound asleep and would not be awoken for comment. They said he had a prepared statement that he had already made before he went to bed in the event that Saddam's execution was carried out.

Officially, Saddam was hanged at 6:05 AM in Iraq or 9:05 PM Crawford time. If Saddam was executed at 9:05 Crawford time, that means Bush was sound asleep before 9 PM in Texas. WTF? What adult goes to bed before 9, especially a sitting president? And for something like this, wouldn't you think they'd wake the fucker for a response if it were indeed true that he was sound asleep? I notice they're not mentioning this today on the news how the president was sound asleep before 9 when reporters were looking for him, but they sure talked about it last night.

2. Incurious George didn't care whether the hanging would trigger violence, apparently.

3. He may well have retired for the evening...
and I don't have a problem with that. He was not in control of the situatuion, could not issue a stay or anything like that. Make sure the prepared comment is ready and then hanging it up (bad pun) is fine with me. I doubt anyone but Laura knew if he was actually asleep. Who knows, maybe he thought he was going to get lucky...

When I hear any snivling about it being Eid, I remind people that Japan hanged 4 criminals on Christmas day and no one I know is incensed about it. IIRC they don't use a trap door in Japan either.

I wish the media would have put this on ignore as I have...

6. Before 9?
More than likely he was either passed out and couldn't be awoken for comment or he was so loaded they wouldn't allow him to comment period.

And got so aroused that they spent themselves in just a few minuets and fell sound asleep.

5. two off the top of my head possibilities
1) they were lying - always a good choice with this crew.

2) * was passed out - or was too plowed to actually say anything to the press.

8. It was those 3 hours of work on his new Iraq policy on Thursday. That's
HARD WORK. The man needs his sleep after all that hard work. And today, his plans include mountain bike wrecking and brush moving around. HARD WORK. We just don't understand.

:sarcasm:

10. Nine o'clock is not early if you've been "sipping" all day. I'm in agreement
that "passed out" and not able to make a public statement would be right on the money. Drunks need vacation/personal time too, doncha know....

12. and it wasn't even before 10. It was before 9
Like others have said, either he was passed out or too inebriated to speak. When does the cartoon network shut down? Doesn't that go all night for a manchild like him, or does it go off at 8?

11. Why is this surprising? He went to bed early and "slept well" the day of the Iraq Invasion.
He is completely disconnected. Frankly I found his going to bed early and "sleeping soundly" on the night of the Invasion a heck of a lot more disturbing as this. Equally disturbing was that while he was vacationing in August 2005, after being briefed on the likely catastrophic events to unfold in New Orleans - incurious George goes about his fundraising, partying (w/McCain for a birthday) and other "happy" events without even trying to find out what is happening to "his people" (eg the citizens of the US he is supposed to at least pretend to care about) - and that it takes WH staffers putting together a DVD of newsclips over a period of days - and then they debated WHO would have the courage to take it to W and get him to watch it in order to light a fire under his *ss to at least begin to pretend to care about the national disaster/tragedy. IMO, he is pathetic.

16. wow - please, please tell me he never said anything like that
(per the night of 911 "ended on a humorousness note" - that is even worse than his campaign jokes about running huge deficits because he "hit the trifecta!" and his declaration at the end of 2001 that he and Laura had had a marvelous year. He IS a sociopath.

17. Here you go. It's worse than you think:
George W. Bush on 9/11: "But the day ended on a relatively humorous note."
Ladies Home Journal:

Peggy Noonan (the interviewer): You were separated on September 11th. What was it like when you saw each other again?

Laura Bush: Well, we just hugged. I think there was a certain amount of security in being with each other than being apart.

George W. Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, “you’ll be sleeping downstairs. Washington’s still a dangerous place.” And I said no, I can’t sleep down there, the bed didn’t look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told the agent we’re going upstairs, and he reluctantly said okay. Laura wears contacts, and she was sound asleep. Barney was there. And the agent comes running up and says, “We’re under attack. We need you downstairs,” and so there we go. I’m in my running shorts and my T-shirt, and I’m barefooted. Got the dog in one hand, Laura had a cat, I’m holding Laura —

Laura Bush: I don’t have my contacts in , and I’m in my fuzzy house slippers —

George W. Bush: And this guy’s out of breath, and we’re heading straight down to the basement because there’s an incoming unidentified airplane, which is coming toward the White House. Then the guy says it’s a friendly airplane. And we hustle all the way back up stairs and go to bed.

Mrs. Bush: And we just lay there thinking about the way we must have looked.

Peggy Noonan (interviewer): So the day starts in tragedy and ends in Marx Brothers.

George W. Bush: That’s right — we got a laugh out of it.
