Coming from Gadhafi this is totally laughable.
Especially given the fate of the medical workers and the Libyan governments attempt to get money from the Bulgarian government.

on note: Whether anyone agrees with him on this issue, the Libyan governments record of human rights abuses and murders make his statement ring hollow (IMO).
Maybe he's trying to protect himself, should his government fall.

He is right, though, in that the trial was a goddamn farce to me - at least, in the sense that prosecutors should have dug into his relationship with the BFEE, Reagan, et. al., and brought the ENTIRE fucking house of cards down.

Of course, now that Saddam will be quickly killed, the BFEE doesn't have to worry about that as much.

6. The face of the "international community" was the sanctions

imposed on Iraq that lead to a great deal of suffering and needless graft and corruption, with even France and Russia helping Saddam contra the provisions of the sanctions. The "international community" just reinforced, if it didn't actually augment, the control that Saddam had over people's lives.

Have the "international community" try Saddam? I think the point was made before the trial even started that the international community and the ICC had no credibility. You heard the international community just authorized the US to stay in Iraq another year, right?

Moreover, having the opportunity to carry out justice themselves was a point of honor; removing Saddam from their jurisdiction would be seen as humiliation by the Shi'ites and the Kurds, saying they're not quite human enough to conduct a trial. Cultural awareness said they needed to do it; now from the Sunni perspective, this is a travesty and an insult. Go figure; few Sunnis went to help the Kurds and the Shi'ites, but that was ok. There's the usual double-standard seen in all things tribal.

In other words, it's a lose-lose situation. I can't tell which would be worse, having an international court do it, or have it done locally. Ideally, the Sunnis would have done it; but that's not going to happen ("tribal", remember?).

I think they'll go through with it, but nary a bit of me would be surprised to hear there's a last minute compromise, some concession by a Sunni group in exchange for permanent imprisonment or exile. Eid is a primo chance for commutations and pardons.
