Saddam to the gallows. It was an easy equation. Who could be more deserving of that last walk to the scaffold - that crack of the neck at the end of a rope - than the Beast of Baghdad, the Hitler of the Tigris, the man who murdered untold hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis while spraying chemical weapons over his enemies? Our masters will tell us in a few hours that it is a "great day" for Iraqis and will hope that the Muslim world will forget that his death sentence was signed - by the Iraqi "government", but on behalf of the Americans - on the very eve of the Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, the moment of greatest forgiveness in the Arab world.

But history will record that the Arabs and other Muslims and, indeed, many millions in the West, will ask another question this weekend, a question that will not be posed in other Western newspapers because it is not the narrative laid down for us by our presidents and prime ministers - what about the other guilty men?

No, Tony Blair is not Saddam. We don't gas our enemies. George W Bush is not Saddam. He didn't invade Iran or Kuwait. He only invaded Iraq. But hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians are dead - and thousands of Western troops are dead - because Messrs Bush and Blair and the Spanish Prime Minister and the Italian Prime Minister and the Australian Prime Minister went to war in 2003 on a potage of lies and mendacity and, given the weapons we used, with great brutality.

In the aftermath of the international crimes against humanity of 2001 we have tortured, we have murdered, we have brutalised and killed the innocent - we have even added our shame at Abu Ghraib to Saddam's shame at Abu Ghraib - and yet we are supposed to forget these terrible crimes as we applaud the swinging corpse of the dictator we created.

It helps me to know that others are as angry and appalled as I am by this horrible spectacle.

I have no real sorrow for Sadaam. He, like all the dictators we have installed and then destroyed over the years when they displeased us, should have known that trusting the American government ALWAYS leads to a bad end. He gambled and lost.

I know, even as I write this, that there are others waiting in the wings, willing to ally themselves with the Americans, thinking that their story will be different. It won't. But no matter.

What I find most troubling is that those who are just as guilty as Sadaam have cheated justice yet again. I have little hope that the murderers in the Bush administrtion will ever be tried for the crimes they've committed. :cry:

We do worse. We use depleted uranium which lasts a thousand years and we use the white sulfate (sp) that catches people on fire. Bush Sr and Jr both used depleted uranium on the Iraqi people. Nothing is more despicable. Also the story might be that Saddam did not gas the Kurds. It seems that the chemical used was probably one preferred by the Iranians. They may have gassed the Kurds to make Saddam look bad. And from a female point of view, what is worse than an Islamic state, which thanks to Georgie Porgie we now have in Iraq, a place where women used to have status and rights and college educations?

I would never have dreamed that America could be so damaged by four evil men and I do not mean Sadam.

I am appalled at what we do to each other. I can not celebrate the deliberate death of another, regardless of what they have done. Although, sometimes I do not feel that way.

36. IMO , the only reason to invade Iraq

was to remove the monster WE created .
What I mean is we had to take the responsibility for our earlier mistakes and clean up the mess we created. all of the other "reasons" were window dressing (and mostly false).
When we invaded Iraq that was the ONLY reason I could think of in its favor , otherwise I thought it was a BAD IDEA(as current events have shown).
We should have gone into Afghanistan with 250,000 troops and Iraq with with 1,000,000 , not to "win the battle" (1 U.S. division could have taken out all of Iraqs military), but to make the country secure after the battle.
This simple reality was totally ignored by the current "commander in chief" and his advisers, since they live in an idealogical fantasy land (frankly, this applies to many D.U.ers also , but in a different sense.)
This may come as a shock to some people on this board , but the U.S. military is actually PREFERRED in simple police situations in Iraq. Because the Iraqi people, despite their views of the U.S. military as occupiers , KNOW that the occupiers WILL BE NEUTRAL in what they find in a police investigation. The U.S. troops have nothing to gain by taking sides , while the current Iraqi police may be either friends or religious affiliates with their enemy.

MY belief is that the current administration (wrongly) thought that the Iraqis would think "Ding Dong the witch is dead" , so let's happily embrace the very same Democratic Ideals as the U.S. .
and now $500,000,000,000 later and 3,000 U.S. Troops dead later maybe some right wingers are saying "maybe we did something wrong(DUH!)"

And the Iraqi military at Saddam's time are not the bloodthirsty Nazi-style murderers the assholes at the Bush I administration wants us think. (Remember that BS "baby incubator" stunt that bimbo spewed, it's a lousy excuse for the US military to slaughter thousands of misguided Iraqi soldiers in the so-called "Highway of Death" back at Gulf War I)

George W. Bush IS Hitler. If Adolf were having an IQ of a 3rd grader, he'd be George W. Saddam's crimes were war-time revenge acts, not hate-motivated race exterminations.

I like Robert Fisk, but he is WRONG on that part.
