"Conyers Wants Nothing More In Public Life Than To Punish Bush For His Crimes"
Will Conyers Put Impeachment Back on Table?

.........

“Many continue to believe Conyers will crank up the impeachment process once the full Democratic Caucus confirms him as Judiciary chair.”

I believe Conyers wants nothing more in public life than to punish George Bush for his multitudinous crimes – that a big chunk of Conyers’ soul wishes it were he, rather than outgoing Rep. Cynthia McKinney, who had the honor to introduce the first impeachment resolution. But Conyers cannot lightly discard his commitment to House Pelosi, who will doubtless deploy the same rationale for burying the impeachment issue in the run-up to the 2008 presidential race as she did in 2006. (The unspoken subtext of Democratic no-impeachment reasoning is: don’t rile the white, racist Republican base – and by all means, avoid a scenario in which Black faces are leading the charge against the White House.)

.............

“Pretending that impeachment remains ‘off the table’ will be like living in 1929 Chicago and pretending that Al Capone isn’t a big man in town.”

We are likely to witness a cacophony of Iraq-related congressional probing beginning early in the 110th session – a noisy challenge to the man whose committee is the constitutionally mandated venue for ultimately making presidents accountable.

Meanwhile, the unraveling of the U.S. position in Iraq will proceed apace, each disaster more horrific than the last. In such an environment, pretending that impeachment remains “off the table” will be like living in 1929 Chicago and pretending that Al Capone isn’t a big man in town. Already, Rep. Henry Waxman is gearing up to issue subpoenas on war profiteering when he assumes chairmanship of the House Government Reform Committee – an investigation that, by itself, could lead to high crimes at the top.

It is inconceivable to me that John Conyers would allow Nancy Pelosi to stay his gavel hand as the year moves toward a crescendo of Iraq probes and debates. The “Dean” ain’t going out like that.

1. So far, Pelosi is a modern-day Ford.
And that's NOT a good ting.

10. She isn't even the speaker yet.
A little early to be judging, isn't it?

13. I think she can change her mind
Once the evidence is out, it's perfectly reasonable to say, "Now that I know what I know..."

4. "Conyers Wants Nothing More In Public Life Than To Do His Congressional Duty."
When he correctly abides by the Constitution by holding oversight hearings, it will have been the first step to putting impeachment on the table because the facts that will be pouring out will demand that impeachment be the next course of action.

I don't think for one moment that Pelosi thinks any differently from Conyers. The impeachment-is-off-the-table talk was meant to nip any media blitz by the Rethugs to drum up support for their boy king before the Democrats will have had a chance to hold a hearing.

6. Exactly!
Pure politician talk not to be confused with "what's really going to happen" (tm). People really need to relax, pop some popcorn and enjoy the show. It's going to be a blockbuster.

7. I think so too and by saying
"it's off the table" didn't say it would not be climbing back onto the table when more dirt and muck and lawbreaking is revealed. I think what she did was probably expedient although a big part of me wanted her to say "Hell yes, we're going to impeach him. He's a criminal and it's our duty!"

9. Thank you
It's amazing to me the number of people here who are so blinded by their outrage that they don't want to do this properly. There's a lot more to be accomplished than getting Bush out of office. The whole rotten infrastructure that put him there and supports him needs to be exposed.

18. You are so right...
With the death of Gerry Ford we are reminded that sometimes the rotten infratructure is itself often supported for political reasons. We cannot afford to allow another end run around justice like Ford pulled regarding Nixon. But it will be interesting to see if Mr. Conyers and weild the full authority of his office and bring these criminals to justice.

He took it down a few notches before the election. He'll start the investigations, and if they reveal what we all anticipate they will, he won't have to worry about the "taking impeachment off the table" statement - the public will demand impeachment. K&R.

17. It's not Conyers or Pelosi that I'd worry about
for a minute. It's some others, who, so very very soon,we will find out their true colors. And then the DU fur will really fly. But, honestly, Conyers is all that has kept me from not giving up on politicians entirely. SO...here's to a bang up 2007!

20. Conyers is in control of Impeachment, not Pelosi.
Pelosis made her "off the table" comment just to shut the damned press up.

It has nothing to do with Conyers.

22. The impeachment movement against Bill Clinton was a ham-handed
riduculous, side-show--not to mention unjustified--and the public knew it. I don't for one minute believe impeachment is off the table. I do think Conyers, Pelosi and other Dems with power will present a case that will prompt the public to call for it themselves, rather than ram it down the throats of people that aren't aware of many of the things that the average DUer is already aware of. I think (I hope) they are proceeding in exactly the correct and most effective way. I have complete trust and confidence in John Conyers. He's nobody's fool.
