1. Holy shit, which Americans in their right minds make up the 47%
....who want the military expanded? I suppose they are the people who believe they won't be drafted and they won't have to pay for the costs.

14. It could be the families of military & national guard
who have had multiple tours of duty in Iraq. I'm sure they would like additional boots on the ground so theirs could come home. Can't say that I would blame them.

2. Nonspecific poll. Expanding the overall military to strengthen it is good but doesn't
mean ADDING more troops to Iraq is the right thing to do.

Big DIFFERENCE.

13. Yeah, there's that and
if the problems with the present army aren't fixed, like piss poor equipment, no equipment at all and back to back combat tours, why would a raw number increase do any good?

as usual.

18. Expanding our military will NOT strengthen it.
It will further dilute the capability of our soldiers as substandard recruits are accepted in order to meet the new quotas. This is already happening.

If you want an expanded military with quality people, you have to draft. And we won't.

20. Expanding it WITH the troops they have already stationed GLOBALLY.
This was the gist of what Kerry said in 2004 campaign back when Iraq still had a chance to be stabilized before their first election was held and the subsequent Civil War reality set in in early 2006 after their third election.

It does not mean bring in new troops, but redeploy the ones we have in nonthreatening areas to reinforce where they are actually needed most, like Afghanistan which has been regressing thanks to the WH's focus on Iraq.

21. Pounding raw material into a system that's breaking down
can't solve the problem. If the career force is starting to bail and there have been reports that it is, who's going to train and lead these draftees? An effective career force isn't created overnight; it takes years.

There's one way solve this problem - stop doing what we're doing. If you can't win and can only lose, get the fuck out of the game.

Leaving no one behind to do the specialized training they were known for. It was a while ago, so I don't have a link or details. I just remember being appalled.

35. The GOPers are running out of time.
I guess they finally see what a tremendous fuckup it was to send 135,000 troops to Iraq! It didn't work in Vietnam and it dam will never work on any country with over 20 million people. You can't watch them all with a pittance of troops.

They don't know what to do, Rummy fucked up the 'war' so bad that none of them know how to fix it.

Withdraw? Not as long as THEY are safe from harm.

24. They're blurring the two again
They're back to confusing people over when they're talking about the 'war on terror' and when they're talking about Iraq. They're taking some good advice about new kinds of strike forces and more troops for that sort of thing - and using it to cover the increased troops in Iraq. If they get their 'more troops', I guarantee it'll just be more in Iraq and none of the real 'war on terror' recommendations. These are the biggest bunch of bastards since the Nazis, they really are.

Any bets on those that want a bigger military are the very ones that are too busy to join up and would never send their own sons and daughters?

Who is going to ask * if this means Barbara and Jenna are enlisting?

to cut the military. Nary a word that the votes they were referencing were based on recommendations from the Secretary of Defense Cheney. :argh:

22. I wouldn't agree with Bush, but there are several Democrats
who have suggested this. The idea being to bring our national guard home (where it belongs). So it would be a replacement more than an expansion.

This shouldn't be about sending more troops to Iraq, although in the context of this poll it will probably be seen that way.

27. That's why they're doing it
To blur what has been said previously, when conditions on the ground weren't as bad. Take a couple of sensible ideas like bringing the guard home and creating new rapid strike forces, and blur it with an increase of troops in Iraq. They're experts at this kind of fuzzing of policy. The fact that it makes Democrats look wishy-washy when they have to say 'this isn't what I meant', and take crap from the left at the same time, well all the better.

CNN Poll: Only 11% Back Call to Send More Troops to Iraq

By E&P Staff

Published: December 18, 2006 9:55 PM ET

NEW YORK President Bush, according to reports, is strongly considering sending a "surge" of troops to Iraq in the new year -- 20,000 or more. Sen. John McCain and Sen. Joe Lieberman have already backed such a plan. But a new poll for CNN released Monday found that this idea draws the support of only 11 percent of Americans.

Fewer than a third of Americans still support the war in Iraq, and more than half say they want U.S. troops out of the country within a year, according to the CNN poll. This 31 percent support marked a new low in the Opinion Research survey.

"Nearly three-quarters said Bush administration policy needs a complete overhaul or major changes. But only 11 percent of those polled backed calls to send more American troops to Iraq, as President Bush is said to be considering," CNN said.

Pollsters interviewed 1,019 adults for the survey, which had a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Only 32 percent said they would support keeping U.S. troops in Iraq "as long as necessary" to hand over control to a new Iraqi government. By comparison, 21 percent said they wanted to see Americans leave immediately, and 33 percent said they wanted to see a U.S. withdrawal within a year.
