DU Charity Donation Drive, Day 1: Over $3,500 raised for America's Second Harvest so far!
Edited on Thu Dec-21-06 09:00 AM by Skinner
I just received our daily update from America's Second Harvest. As of 10:00 AM ET this morning, visitors to our website have donated a total of $3,590 to support local food banks across the United States!

To donate in our charity donation drive, just click this link:

http://help.secondharvest.org/democraticunderground

America's Second Harvest Network—The Nation's Food Bank Network

America's Second Harvest—The Nation's Food Bank Network is the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the country with a Network of more than 200 Member food banks and food-rescue organizations serving all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The America's Second Harvest Network secures and distributes more than 2 billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually; and supports approximately 50,000 local charitable agencies operating more than 94,000 programs including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after-school programs and Kids Cafes. Last year, the America's Second Harvest Network provided food assistance to more than 25 million low-income hungry people in the United States, including nearly 9 million children and nearly 3 million seniors. For more on the America's Second Harvest Network, please visit secondharvest.org.

FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY: Get a 10% match on your donation!

DU member Midlodemocrat has made an extremely generous challenge to the members of DU in support of the DU Year-end Charity Donation Drive. She has pledged to donate $100 to America's Second Harvest for every $1,000 donated by the members of Democratic Underground, up to a maximum challenge donation of $1,500!

It's like every dollar you donate to America's Second Harvest will be worth $1.10! Make sure you donate soon to take advantage of this challenge... because this challenge ends when DUers raise $15,000.

4. Three responses in more than half an hour?
I guess you all are already bored with the charity fund drive, huh?

Perhaps if I figured out some sort of clever tie-in involving smoking, circumcision, and missing mountain climbers there might be a little more enthusiasm.

C'mon folks. This is our chance to actually make a difference. Let's do it!

8. Quick Question, Skinner. Does This Total Include The Additional Support From Midlodemocrat's
challenge or will that be factored in afterwards?

Didn't know if these totals would be outside of that or not.

17. I'm was planning to wait until the end of the challenge to donate.
If we get to $15,000 before the 31st, I'll donate then.

20. LOL. Not really, but thank you.
Second Harvest was a big passion of a dear relative of mine who passed away in 2003. I think it's the least I can do to keep her legacy of giving alive.

and posted a challenge to Free Republic to start their own charity drive. Hardly any response. I posted again today. Nothing. You post. Not much.

I posted another tongue in cheek post today entitled: smoking baby circumcised by lost mountain climbers and got alot of views but not many comments.

I think $3500 is better than nothing but it is kind of a poor showing from a community with near 100,000 members.

I am starting to get a little upset by the topics that get the attention and the ones that go ignored. Isn't this the same group that gets so pissed about the MSM covering missing pretty girl stories and shark attacks while ignoring the important stories? Let's be careful in our pretty shiny glass house.

Here is my latest rant:

22. Just Donated. Caution: Dial Up's might have a little wait getting through but
it will probably slow down later. Kind of hung me hitting "Refresh" a few times...but after that it was okay.

I think site was busy...so maybe wait until the "after work crowd" has done their thing and try a little later.

Good Thing! So many DU'ers Donated! And...that it's busy again!
