http://www.pollingreport.com/2008.htm#misc

John Edwards beats McCain by 2% in the NBC/Wall St Journal poll, Dec 8-11 of nationally registered voters.

So far, Hillary can't beat McCain according to any poll. And Obama is showing numbers half as high as hers.

Now, it's a long way off, and there are old polls where Edwards doesn't come near McCain, but as soon as John Edwards declared, his numbers shot past McCain.

I doubt there's much room for McCain's numbers to surge in the next 2 years.

9. Edwards, like millions of Americans, has seen the light on the war.
Even Hillary looks like she might be coming around (just in time for the campaign season, coincidentally :sarcasm: ).

That was my big problem with Edwards in '04, too. But if John Edwards Release 2.0 really has fixed that nasty pro-war bug, I think he deserves a close look.

20. He's owned up to it and called it a mistake. Only a handful of nays
happened that day. It was political suicide, as the country was still in shock.

The GOP took advantage of those times. This way, the GOP can't swiftboat him on it.

In fact, everything they say is complete bullshit.

Their job is to perpetuate the hoax.

4. Yes, Edwards is probably our strongest potential coandidate right now.
Hillary has very high negative numbers, 47%, which doesn't leave much room for victory. Obama is still too unknown to the majority of voters. Gore says he won't run, so it looks like Edwards is our best bet. I would like to see a Gore/Edwards or a Gore/Clark ticket.

5. Polls this far out now represent ratio of positive/negative media stories.
Always subject to change when candidates actually start debating each other.

6. Can we stop with this McCain preoccupation already?
He's not going to be the '08 nominee, the far-right will see to that! I don't know a single repuke who likes McCain. The only people who tend to like McCain are the so-called "centrists", and they really don't vote in huge numbers during the primaries!

Whoever we wind up facing in '08, it won't be McCain - or Guliani, for that matter.

This is just pre-game show. When they start playing, I'll watch. There's a good chance that someone we have only vaguely considered will win one or both party nominations.

10. Exactly. Very early in the game and...
we have 2 more years of Bush damage to endure. I think any Dem will win over the Rethug in November '08.

11. And in May with all the political Science majors graduating this means
we will have more experts to make such predictions...
Can't we just wait until 2008 or at least the latter part of 2007 before we have to hear all these so called experts give their take on the election?

14. McCain won't get the nomination, though...
He'll have the same problem as I believe Hillary will have in the primaries. They've both spent the last few years taking many positions that may piss off their own base, but would (theoretically) help them in a general election. IMHO, they have both done this to such a degree that they've pissed off a large enough portion of their base to prevent them from ever winning the primary. They may show a good percentage of support in early polling, but as other candidates drop out, they will find it far more difficult to pull in the support from those candidates.

I'll admit that's a lot of different polls. Even if it's a very low sample number. And location is extremely critical in polls like this.

Having said that, I hold the American public in very low esteem. After all, they let the 2004 election get close enough to steal. And that is the single most damning thing that has happened in America in many years, in my opinion. That should have been so utterly crucifying for Bush. But it wasn't.

These polls, again in my opinion, are the cart before the horse. And they are more than likely being used to persuade voters. Not the other way around. But I'm cynical.
