"A wise gift will keep on giving"
This was the top of the fold headline in my local newspaper this morning and it's a good reminder to check out charities before donating.

According to the article, spending at least 75% of revenue on program expenses is considered a good standard. What struck me when I read the accompanying listing of San Francisco bay area charities was that seven food banks spent over 88% of their revenue of program the percent of revenue spent on program expense. The ubiquitous United Way checks in at 75% on the nose.

1. There was a huge United Way scandal years ago...
I imagine they've fallen into line by now.
