Time magazine couldn't bear to give person of the year to a liberal
The corporate cheerleaders just couldn't recognize obvious gains on left by Chavez, Pelosi, Dean, Gore or even Stewart and Colbert.

13. Bono got it last year.
As did the Gates family, who seem to split their donations equally between the parties. Not that they're leftists, or anything, but they do have liberal tendencies.

3. I like what they did
I hope it makes people think. Too many people think they cannot make a difference these days. And why should the person of the year be someone in authority or a celebrity? It might make some reclaim their personal power to help us make change. I say...Power to the people!

5. Yes, it should have been Howard Dean
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 12:09 AM by rocknation
While the digital empowerment of the electorate certainly played a role in this year's election, it was Dean's fifty-state strategy that made the precedent-setting "Blue Tsunami" possible. But heaven forbid that the MSM should give ANY kind of praise to Democrats. That's why Rumsfeld was fired the day after the election, and why Bush is putting off his new Iraq strategy until after Christmas--the alternative is allowing the Dems to command the headlines.

8. Bush
the people that were talking on CNN, some of who were on the committee were leaning toward bush AGAIN. They said that bush should have been man of the year every year he was president. WHY....CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN. Unless they were teaming him with Hitler.

10. "Person of the Year" isn't necessarily an honor.
Hitler was PotY decades ago.

It's given to whoever "has most influenced events in the preceding year." Lots of people, and not all of them political, can fit that description.

17. You do understand
that "Person of the Year" is not an award or an honor?

Hitler got it in 1939. It's their estimation of who impacted the world, for good or ill, the most.

"Person of the year" is a measure of one's impact on current events of the time, not whether you did something good or bad.

19. Chavez is no liberal
Chavez is a freakin' commie dictator wannabe. First, he suborns the courts to shore up his personal power, then he introduces a law to basically make him president for life. That's not liberal.

20. Shoulda Given It To Ismail Haniyeh
the election of HAMAS certainly changed the dynamic of the I/P conflict and has most affected the news. But, no, the cowards at TIME had to do something that is kind, fluffy and will sell magaizines, and no dirty terra-ist A-rab is going to get the job done.

22. My pick would have been Keith Olbermann.
For his telling of the truth...such a rare thing in America these days, the truth. Our country was founded and based on truth and trust. These are things I think Keith Olbermann still values, as does the majority of the American people. Time and Newsweak have become the "tabloids" of the day, because they've abandoned Trust and Truth.

But maybe someday...

You'll come running back (said you would, baby)
You'll come running back (I don't always said you would)
You'll come running back (I won't have to worry no more)
Yes time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
Time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
Oh, time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
I said, time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
Oh, time, time, time is on my side
Yeah, time, time, time is on my side

BELIEVE IT, or, NOOOOOOOOT!

23. I thought it was a good choice
And it seems like the type Time would pick. They certainly wouldn't have gone in a predictable way (my guess was Pelosi).

When it all comes down to it, I think many of this year's big stories revolve around the new media (namely us). I think the choice makes a lot of sense, and it is a good article. And for the people here poo-poohing it, stop bitching so much. It's not an award! And if it was, would you want your favorite person to be in the same company as Hitler, Stalin and Khomeini? Jeez!
