At his employee holiday dinner tomorrow night they are doing a "white elephant" gift exchange.

Our contributions?
DVDs of "Farenheit 9/11" & "Bowling for Columbine"

He works for a VERY conservative company.

Should we be very quiet about who tossed those into the pile?

3. Well, considering that traditionally, a "white elephant" means

something burdensome, no longer wanted, or never wanted, it might be a hit among conservatives for conversational content alone. Folks might just think you are yourselves conservative for donating it.

it's driving me crazy b/c I see it used all the time and I can't figure out what it means - someone please tell me what DH stands for. I know it's spouse or whatever, but what do the initials actually mean? I would be forever grateful since this has driven me nuts for a long time and I didn't want to ask and look like an idiot.

11. I think that you might be misunderstanding the whole idea of a white elephant

exchange. It's supposed to be something really, really crappy that you want to get rid of. I would suggest a copy of one of Ann Coulter's books because they are all on the markdown shelf at Barnes and Noble.

If it's a regular gift exchange, your idea is fabulous. The only reason I know about white elephants is that we have one every year at my house and the stuff people bring is crap.

Last year, I brought a photoshop I did of * in that green Borat sling. HUGE hit among my lib friends.

Why not think generically? It's the holidays...these events are supposed to be fun and there is supposed to be a lightheartedness to the gifts

Better ideas, especially when you are concerned hubby's job may be jeopardized by 'someone finding out'
At an under $15 white elephant this year, one of the nicest (useful) gifts was a coffeemaker.
One of the coolest fun gifts was a handheld 20 Questions game.
One of the coolest useless gifts was a lava lamp (in fact there were two...)

If you are nervous about giving it, why are you bothering to do it in the first place?

I'm sure there might be a few DUers that totally disagree with me and believe that every occasion is a proper time and place to proseletyze, rules of etiquette, right or wrong, disagree.

While these movies rank as my favorites I have ever seen, I think your decision to do this borders on tasteless (please don't be offended...you asked for an honest opinion). I equate it to wrapping a holy tome (of any religion) as an anonymous gift. It not only puts the hypothetical gift giver (you) on the spot, worse, it puts the receiver in an awkward position.

If you think a gift may be objectionable to some or may put the receiver in a negative light, don't do it.

Enjoy your holiday, make it stress-free, and save sermons for those who care - I bet you have lefty friends who may still have not seen those movies... they would make far better recipients! I have F911...but I still don't own Bowling....my address is...

15. I understand what you are saying, BUT

I still have very VIVID memories of a company banquet held shortly after the Iraq invasion. The function closed with a soloist singing that crap song, "Proud to be An American" or whatever it is, and EVERYONE but me STOOD UP during it! Like it was the fucking national anthem or something!

I guess I'm looking to even the score or something. Besides, I'm sort of hoping to end up with "Bowling" since I don't own it yet myself!
