If Sunnis & Shiites Refuse To Share Power Who Do We Choose To Back?

If we back the Shiites, we go directly against the Saudi backed Sunnis. If we back the Sunnis, or even act just as protectors of the status quo, we go directly against the Majority of the population.

If neither side will share power with the other then a Democracy cannot exist.
However, our troops can remain stationed 'between' the warring groups and continue to be killed by both sides.

There really is no choice to back one or the other, or try to preserve the status quo.
The only choice is to withdraw and let regional powers and the UN step in.

I can't help but believe that a large number of Iraqis, both Shiite and Sunni, would welcome the countries return to the latter. If we treat the war on the terms that Bush defines, then we'll never get an exit strategy and no peace will ever be possible. The key is to get Syria to twist Baathists' arms, Iran to twist the Shiites' arms, Saudi Arabia to twist the fundy Sunnis' arms, and then make them all sit down and start cutting deals. That's always been the only way out of Iraq without making the situation worse. It's the anal retentive brat in the White House who can't seem to understand this.

We withdraw, they have their civil war, and then we/the UN will probably need to reoccupy.

If the Sunnis are wise, they'll surrender fairly quickly...I simply don't see how they prevail.
