On the Hill, the sound of silence
John Sweeney, still reeling from re-election loss to Kirsten Gillibrand, fails to show for votes

By JUDY HOLLAND, Washington bureau
First published: Sunday, December 10, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Since losing re-election last month, Rep. John Sweeney has played hooky in Congress, skipping votes, dodging reporters and avoiding his new make-shift office in a basement cubicle set up for lame ducks.
Sweeney's friends and colleagues Capitol Hill say the Republican from Clifton Park is still stunned about the outcome of the Nov. 7 election when he lost to Democratic challenger Kirsten Gillibrand.

Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, a close friend of Sweeney's, says the four-term Republican is "frustrated and angry" and feels he was unfairly attacked a week before the election after the Times Union and other newspapers disclosed that police had investigated a domestic dispute between Sweeney and his wife on Dec. 2, 2005.

<snip>

"There's a lot of upheaval in his life," Weldon said. "It's one thing if you're behind for six months and see it coming," he said of Sweeney's election loss. "What do you do now? How do you feed yourself and your wife?"

Retiring Rep. Sherwood R. Boehlert, R-New Hartford, said Sweeney was "still smarting from the loss" and had "suffered from a multitude of problems."

Boehlert said Sweeney's biggest problem was that he had an "R" (for Republican) after his name, so he was hurt by the unpopularity of the Iraq war and the congressional page scandal.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-Manhattan, said Sweeney is usually "hail-fellow-well-met" but ignored his greeting of hello and "went right by" when they encountered each other last week.

Well holding him to Republican standards

"Exercise some personal responsibility and get a job!"

That's what Republicans like to bellow to people who lost their jobs and can't find one right away despite looking very hard and can't find one due to Republican economic policies.

5. How do you feed your wife?
Well, I'd think someone who has been a conman-er Congressman as long as he has would have some savings stashed away. I'm sure that his former constituents who are working two jobs and still not getting by are all sympathetic.

7. Who writes these $%^#$ stories?
And what is their point?

I'm sure it is a shock to lose an election that you thought was in the bag. I'm sure it sucks to have your cushy-ass perk-encrusted job taken away.

Some people handle hardship better than others. As far as I'm concerned - that's when you see what a real man or woman is made of - when they get the crap kicked out of themselves by life.

This guy's made of whine, self-pity and other typical traits Republicans are made of, but like to accuse Dems of being made of. And the reporter who wrote this tripe and the publisher who published it, well isn't that special.

8. I think their point is that he's not doing his job
I'm not sure whether you're questioning the point of the story itself -- that he's missing votes -- or the depiction of his personal torment as an explanation of his poor work performance.

12. Yeah, some of the comments were kinda lame
The Pete Sessions bit about him picking up a "bug" in Iraq or Afghanistan is really a stretch. That doesn't explain the lying, smearing ads he ran against Gillibrand. I think those ads hurt him more than anything and I don't think he failed to take Gillibrand's challenge seriously because, after all, he bought a ton of air time to run lying, smearing ads against her!

32. Here's my LTTE published by the Post Star in October:
As a longtime resident of this district, I am insulted by the lies emanating from the Sweeney camp. We should all feel insulted. They have accused his opponent, Kirsten Gillibrand of being a war profiteer and of involvement in HUD scandals, neither of which is true.
Sweeney’s accusation of “war profiteering” against Gillibrand – a serious charge considering the cost to district families of Bush’s war -- is especially egregious. A “war profiteer” is someone who benefits from defense spending over which they have some influence. Gillibrand’s husband owns some stock in defense contractor BAE Systems as part of a retirement plan, as do a lot of Sweeney’s constituents, who, I guess, are now war profiteers in the congressman’s eyes. Had Mrs. Gillibrand been a member of Congress the last 6 years, had she also voted for Bush’s war and had BAE rewarded her for doing so, I would not quibble with the charge of “war profiteer”. But none of those three conditions applies to the Democratic candidate or her husband. All three, however, do apply to Mr. Sweeney, who received $2,000 in this election cycle alone from BAE’s PAC. His total career take from defense contractors of $49,500 buys a lot of air time with which to smear his opponent and distract voters from his own record of voting against the interests of the troops. According to the non-partisan Disabled American Veterans organization, Sweeney has voted on their side only 13% of the time in his career and 0% in 2005, while representatives in neighboring districts can boast a 100% record for the same period.
I say to my fellow voters in this district that you can and should look all this up. Sweeney’s well-financed campaign is betting their massive ad budget that you won’t.

If he was going to still be around, he'd have to go to a 5-day workweek anyway. If he's on a sulkfest now, it looks like he was a lot more interested in keeping his job than actually doing it anyway.

38. You may be thinking of Don Sherwood (R-Pa.)
I know of no allegations of adultery against Sweeney. The domestic-violence incident involved his wife, not any mistress.

Sherwood was in his DC apartment with a much younger woman when she called 911, telling police he was trying to choke her. He said he was only giving her a back rub. He also said she was merely a "casual acquaintance". Eventually, he admitted to a five-year-long adulterous affair with her. Her suit against him for assault was settled out of court, with a confidentiality provision.

Sherwood's family still owns the car dealership he opened. If he reads this article, maybe he'll hire Sweeney as a salesman. On the other hand, he doesn't need as many sales people as there are jobless Republicahs. Tom DeLay will have to teach some of them how to kill termites.
