Safire Among 2006 Winners Or Presidential Medal of Freedom
Click here for the whole story.

<snip>

Safire? The New York Times, Safire's long-time employer, said he is being honored "for polishing the nation’s language and elevating the debates of the day."

Elevating the debates of the day? Like when he was a speechwriter for the Nixon administration, and coined Vice President Spiro Agnew's phrase "nattering nabobs of negativism," to attack the media?

Not to suggest that political concerns are behind who gets the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but you have to figure that somewhere, Sean Hannity is smiling.

4. I would love to see the day when people
like Cindy Sheehan, the Navy Lawyer(Swift I believe his name) who took on the Bush Administration in the Supreme Court, Siebel Edwards and other whistle blowers win the Medal of Freedom, they are far more deserving and actually live up to the name. (Wouldn't be also cool if Mike Malloy won it, just to watch freeper heads explode?)

7. Old bastard never met a war he didn't like.
Is there an honor more tarnished these days than the Presidential Medal of Freedom? By comparison the Grammys look like the soul of Credibility.:puke:

9. the apples to apples example
would be if a Democrat gave one to John Dean -- he and Safire both got their start in the Nixon administration. Dean had the good sense to recognize that not all republicans are made equal.
