Partner and I just renewed our passports
The old ones were sequential the new ones are not. Mine came with the imbeded chip , his did not. I have more of a political "history" including jail. Do you think I am being marked for extra scrutiny, or am I paranoid?

2. how can you tell it has a chip?
I just received my sons' new passports and they seem just like my old one. And no, you are not paranoid at all. Not in this country these days. :(

I have read here you can disable the chip by microwave oven. Is that true?

4. On the last page is an advisory

not to fold spindle or mutilate as it may damage 'electronics' also has some pretty graphics, that partner doesn't have. His laminated pictur page is different too, it has graphics in the laminate, mine is more simple laminate. I think it is easy to ruin the chip, but I might need to use it. I was thinking more in terms of lead foil jacket to prevent unauthorized, remote reading.

5. I think 10 seconds in the old microwave would fix it so they had to do it
the old fashion way "READ IT"

8. Shouldn't be a problem
Since there's no power source, it's limited to passive response and just about the only way to scan something like that is to actively pass it over/under a scanner. Since a passive response unit can't transmit and stores everything in solid state, you don't really have to worry.

9. Expose it to a LARGE MAGNET!!
I think if you were to expose it to a large magnetic field, you might render ineffective the government's ability to do whatever mischief it plans to do to you.

11. They put it in there for a reason
And whatever the reason was, it was probably not to benefit you. On the other hand I'm the first to admit that I'm in the grip of late-stage paranoia so it could be just harmless government weirdness too, although I don't believe that for a second. B-)

12. PARANOIA?!?!?
Paranoia???!!!

I think NOT!!

THIS government's reason for putting electronics into things like passports CANNOT be "benign".

Remember -- the STATE DEPARTMENT issues PASSPORTS.

And you KNOW who the HEAD of the State Department is, right???!!!

ONE OF THE PRIME ARCHITECTS OF THE ILLEGAL AND IMMORAL WAR against the innocent people of IRAQ!

13. I just got my renewal - 3rd time
It is much smaller than the old ones. Black, also. It is very laminated. I have a hologram of not only an eagle, but what looks to be Washington's profile. The first two pages (where my pix is) has pink and green diamond patterns. On the last page at the bottom is a bar code with numbers underneath it. No, the numbers are not sequential. I have no idea if there is a chip underneath this bar code. It is a white strip, unlike the color on the rest of the page.

My husband renewed his a couple of years ago. Another difference in his and mine is that under the Authority Issued, his says Charlotte, North Carolina. Mine says the United States of America.

Yes, a lot has changed.

DU doesn't encourage anyone to tamper with a national passport. Thanks.
