Sanctioned Fund Raiser for Straight Story - Please Help, DU

Yesterday morning I read a post by Straight Story and my heart broke:

My reaction was to start a fund raiser for SS and his family - My post urging DUers to help out was locked because I did not have prior permission. Yesterday afternoon I received permission from Skinner for this 1 post - just this one. So, PLEASE kick and recommend so we can get this to the Greatest Page and keep it alive!

For those of you who sent money, pledged to send money, responded with kind words and voted yesterday's post up, I thank you again. For those of you who requested alternate payment methods, I now have a way in which to handle that and will PM you soon with instructions.

Straight Story and I have been in contact and he deeply appreciates the kindness and solidarity the DU community is offering him :)

Here is an excerpt from my post yesterday:

I would like the DU Community to come together to assist Straight Story in his difficult time.

All of us, at one point or another, have been in a hard spot - emotionally or financially, or both. And while money doesn't fix everything it does allow one to have a little bit of breathing space; one less thing to worry about.

I have set up a PayPal account to which donations can be made. If each of us offers what we can the account will no doubt add up rather quickly - If we can raise money to send Helen Thomas roses we can certainly help one of our own.

I finally broke down the other night. Two years of fighting depression, from mom's death and others to my wife's illness, caught up to me in a bad way.

I have tried hard, but have made my life a mess I am not sure I can fix. It's been one bad thing after another. I feel like I have let down so many by crawling inside my fear and not being able to come.

I have lived two years in fear and panic attacks. I got some help, was getting better, then financial issues have crushed me and it was the straw that broke me.

I've quit drinking, which helps, but so many issues swirl around my head it is hard for me to focus anymore on anything. I will be seeing my counselor again next week, for the first time since I found out my X died and contacted my kids.

I have felt shame, guilt, sadness, and so much more - while having days where things seemed ok.

two nights ago I realized what it was I lost when mom died - my hope. I kept hoping she would be ok, and then she up and died, a week after coming home. I have wondered and fought to find why her death hurt me so badly, and it was that hope became only a dream. I had no dreams left, just living day to day in worry and fear, to the point I am off work now because I have not been able to function and take care of my wife.

This thread means the world to me, and I am so sad to cause my friends here this mess of my life.

Today is my mom's birthday, she would have been 72. It is on dad's mind too, he came home from work sick.

I could write a novel of a thread about how much you all mean to me. Through the worst times of my life I have had DU to vent on and distract me from issues.

I will check back later as I have to get out of the house for awhile again, I am going over to see dad and tell mom's urn happy birthday. It's just something I have to, and I will tell her about my friends here.

I am the QUEEN of condiments and almost half of one of those refridgerators was stocked with Asian sauces and pickles of every kind!

I contributed, and though I do not know Straight Story I am sure he is JUST A HUMAN BEING. And when TAPat sends the funds to him and he cries in front of his kids, and they ask him "dad, why are you crying?" he can say. "Well, I reached out my hand to some people I don't know and who don't know me and there were 500 hands reaching back." What a great Christmas story for Straight to tell his kids every Christmas and to his grandkids as he grows old..and he will grow old, because of the generosity of the people here at DU! Keep giving...just $5.00 from 10 people is $50.00 .. it can pay his water bill!...we can even pay his electric bill and his mortgage..and give him peace of mind and the knowledge that PEOPLE CARE.

As of right now we have $460.65 in PayPal contributions that we will be able to overnight to SS Monday morning! :toast:

I'm really tired - working this with all of y'all's help has been the most fulfilling and REAL thing I have done in quite a while.

Some of you have mentioned that this effort has renewed your faith in DU (or words to that effect) and frankly I have to say that I agree with you.

I am mostly very quiet here; I read a lot. I click on the Laura Bush Bad Dress Day posts and the Freeper Heads Exploding threads and enjoy myself immensely - but the last three days almost every post has infuriated me. The inanity of the vast majority of them, in light of our effort here, sickens me.

I am truly AMAZED that there have not been radically more contributions - I had thought that within a matter of hours, $5 at a time, that we would be in the thousands. Maybe the vast majority of folks at DU are more interested in the *National Charity*... Well, here we are afternoon time and at this writing we've had only one new PayPal contribution and zero pledges since this morning.

What we really want to have happen today is a round $1000.00. :think: That's only $184.31 difference! I happen to KNOW that this amount overnighted tomorrow morning will have an immediate and seriously meaningful impact on SS's situation.

I've told Straight Story that after today I'm going to have to greatly restrict my time - I have spent every waking moment since Thursday morning working this and I have so many things I need to be getting done... And frankly, I'm worn out :(
We will, of course, be checking in, updating as necessary and managing the $ as they come in.

359. Update: My job is saved! And more....

I have been up and stressed all day that I would lose my job, paperwork issues with FMLA. Well, i finally got a hold of a supervisor and got the needed extension. You have no idea how relived I am right now. I probably won't get a paycheck this week, but I will have the help you have given me to save me from certain hell.

With the help of people here and the hours on the phone today things are, for the first time in so loong, looking positive.

I cannot express how happy I am right this second. I was so depressed this week all I could think about was going to sleep and never waking up, I even googled ways to kill myself quickly :( and that is not like me, but I was so depressed I felt my wife and daughter would be better off without me.

For the last two years I have felt "It's a Wonderful life" was just a dream. But you, my friends, have made it something real.

out of the woods? No. But on the right path? Yes. Thanks to you all and your help and prayers.

I have been too ashamed to post here except once. Too depressed. Too scared that my life was near a bad turning point that I have not slept but 1-2 hours a night in a week. But finally, thanks to you and calls today I have, for once in so long, hope.

You have no idea what it means to me.

I will post more when I am able, just too blown away and frazzled right now to post much. Thank you all, especially my friend Tapat and her partner.

Thank you my friends, for the love and kindness you have shown in my worst hours. For the first time in a long time I have hope, and I have dreams again. This week I won't have my electric and gas shut off because you cared. I will have a christmas, because you were here.

375. UPDATE - Monday evening -

I have to admit that it dawned on me how so wonderfully happy I have been today :)

It was almost as though I had gone back in time and helped my own family when we were in that dark place. I've really learned so much about what it REALLY means to reach out.

Now we know that it only takes a small, truly human spark to start a big fire.

I will post the photo of the cashier's check tomorrow morning around 8:30 a.m. central (I've been busy working on our livelyhood work and Bobbolink's situation and just couldn't get to it) because all y'all need to see it!

It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

380. I have always really loved the idea of "paying it forward."

I have been in some very tight financial spots myself on many occasions, and the only reason I survived was that others helped me. Sometimes the help was very small, but it still kept me afloat until I could manage on my own or find some other sort of help.

The "Secret Santa," who finally revealed himself this year because he has cancer and wants his story known so perhaps others will carry forth his generosity, also gave to others because he was helped when he was at his most desperate.

A former student of mine, a 22-year-old boy, posted an online message asking anyone in our town who needed help for Christmas to contact him. He has spent over $500 of his own money buying Christmas trees, gifts, food, etc., for people who asked for his help. The fact is, he doesn't have a lot hismelf, but he wants to help others for Christmas.

I emailed him to ask for an address so I could send a check to help him defray some of his expenses, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Straight Story, you are the one who needed help this time. But with just a little luck, you might find yourself in a much better position sometime in the future. When that happens, just remember to pay it forward.

I would like to go through and thank all of you that have posted thoughts and donations on this thread. It has meant the world to my family in ways that I cannot even begin to express here on this forum. We have been lost, and its hard to admit that we were as lost as we became over the last two years. Depression is a terrible thing and it has taken hold of my husband and impacted both of us in so many ways. The light at the end of the tunnel has been beautiful to say the least and humbling to say the most. Reaching out was the best thing we could have done and we both learned something that was beyond words...that hope comes from within and that friends are all around if you can only get over pride to share whats really going through your mind on the darkest days. To say that I have been touched would be a simple understatement. I would like to ask one more thing from all of you...if I could. Could you please include an address for a Christmas card from us? It can be an email address or a street address. It doesn't matter. Whatever you are comfortable with. I would just like to give back and let you know that nothing that has been said or done has gone unnoticed and I would like to extend that love in our own small way to you all. All I have to say iw wow. I've been a member of DU for a whiel, and you know why? Because you're the best people in the world. People who care.

I usually someone who can take care of my own problems, but I was told by a friend recently that sometimes you need to ask for help.

A few other DUers know what we've been going through this last year, but until recent I could keep it under control.

My wife and I have been going through a series of job loss and gain since I retired from the AF last year. Things were just fine while I was in, but retirement hasn't gone as well as I hoped. Plus, I'm living in an area right now were finding a good job is near impossible. Plus there are the bills. I lost one of my cars to the repo man, right now my mortage is in danger of coming under default. I can stand to lose my car, the cable, phone, internet... but being homeless is going to kill us.

With the credit card people hounding me, I'm in a big pickle right now. I don't know what to do and where to go. And I'm sleeping too much... A fellow DUer think its situational depression.

Asking for help is a big deal to me. I appreciate whatever help I can get. Right now I'm trying something different.
